Response to Instruction and Intervention (RtI2) Definition: The practice of providing high-quality instruction/intervention that is matched to student needs.
5 Essential Components • Multi-tiered Framework for Instruction and Intervention • Problem-Solving Process • Data-Based Decision Making • Academic Engaged Time (AET) • Professional Development
Tier One-Core Instruction • Expected proficiency is 80-85% • Regular gathering of data • CST • PA • Common Assessments • Differentiated Instruction • Content (what is taught) • Process (how it is taught) • Product (how learning is shown) • Materials (supplementary) • Scaffolding
Tier 2 Strategic or Supplemental Intervention • Target Group: Students who are not making adequate progress given good first-tier instruction • Provided in addition to Tier 1 Instruction • Flex/Saturday School • 10-15 % of students • More intensive time and focus • Immediate • Aligned to student needs • Based on data
Tier 3Intensive Intervention • Not necessarily Special Education services. • 1-5% of students • More focused, more intensive • After School Tutoring • RSP • SDC
Essential #2Problem-Solving Process 1. Define the problem What is it we want students to achieve? 2. Problem Analysis Why is the student unable to achieve the benchmark? 3. Implementation What are we going to do about it? 4. Evaluation Did our plan work?
Essential # 3Data-Based Decision Making • Collect data Early and Often • CST • SPA • CA • Flex Post Tests
Essential # 4Academic Engaged Time (AET) • The number of minutes each day/week which students receive quality academic instruction and demonstrate behaviors that reflect student engagement in that instruction • AET is a strong predictor of student achievement at all levels
Key Elements of AET • Effective pedagogy • High-quality student-teacher interaction • Instruction that addresses multiple learning modalities. • Clearly defined behavioral expectations • Effective classroom management.
Essential # 5Professional Development • Frequent • Focused • Data driven • School-based • Teacher input
What’s Next? • CST Strand Analysis • Flex Curriculum • Strand Focused • Department Created • Saturday School • Classroom Visits Focused on AET
