NEWSPAPER TABLE OF CONTENTS MIGHTY CASEY STRIKES OUT MUDVILLE LOSES IN NAILBITER Yesterday was not a good day for Mudville’s hometown team. They looked rather lethargic through the first eight innings with their only support coming from Mighty Casey’s two home runs, but in the ninth inning something brought them to life. Surprisingly, the slumping Flynn earned his first hit in his last sixteen attempts. Then, the talented rookie Blakely, who has been a huge disappointment this year, hit a rocket which bounced off the wall for a double moving Flynn to third. Mudville had momentum on their side and put themselves in position to win the game with Mighty Casey, the league’s home run leader at the plate. For no apparent reason, the hometown hero refused to swing at the first two pitches saying after the game, “When you’re as good as I am, there is just no need to swing at pitches that I can’t hit out. NEWSPAPER TABLE OF CONTENTS MIGHTY CASEY STRIKES OUT CONT. BIGGER CONTRIBUTION NEEDED FROM CASEY SAYS VILLE Muddy Ville, the team’s new manager, appeared devastated, “Everybody here knows that…that Casey is one of the all-time greats in the game, but he needs to be more a team player. He needs to try harder and rely on more than sheer strength.” This is a continuation of an upsetting trend for Mudville fans of an obvious lack of effort from Casey. This mighty superstar is on pace for a record shattering ninety-one home runs and has brought a countless number of fans to the stadium to see his awe-inspiring display. However, until he starts to come through in the tough situations when his team truly needs him to be a superstar. People outside our little town will never think of him as the greatest ever.

Ernest Lawrence Thayer MASTER OF THE FIGURE OF SPEECH Ernest Lawrence Thayer’s most well-known poem is “Casey at the Bat.” Although its basic plot is fairly simple, he makes this poem standout by using figures of speech to create a strong sense of suspense. Thayer uses hyperbole to make the reader understand how serious these people are about baseball, he uses a metaphor, “Cooney died at second.” He uses synecdoche to convey how many people were depending on Casey saying, “Ten thousand eyes were on him as he rubbed his hands with dirt.” On the same note he said, “Five thousand tongues applauded.” To create realism, Thayer uses dialect having Casey say, “That ain’t my style.” This use of language has the reader so caught up in the story that he can not stop reading until he finds out what happened to the last pitch. AARON: AN AUTHOR AND ATHLETE DEITY OF DETAIL We know Hank Aaron as an athlete and the all-time home run champion. However, he has proved that he is also a fabulous author. He gives the reader the feeling that they are actually there with him. In his nonfiction selection from I Had a Hammer, Mr. Aaron discusses every detail of the record-breaking night. He says, “Downing’s first pitch was a change of pace that went into the dirt. The umpire, Satch Davidson, threw it out, and the first-base umpire, Frank Pulli, tossed Downing another one of the specially marked infared balls.” This is only a small portion of Aaron’s description of his historic at bat. By giving all of these details, one can reach a clear mental picture of everything from “the ball shooting out on a line over the shortstop, Bill Russell, who bent his knees as if he were going to jump up and catch it” to “Buckner running to the fence like he was going to catch it.” Hank Aaron MAGAZINE TABLE OF CONTENTS

“UNFORTUNATE” TRUTH COMES OUT DYING MAN REVEALS MURDEROUS PLOT Montresor revealed some highly disturbing news to the world just moments before his own death. If his reports are true, he was the man responsible for the mysterious disappearance of the Italian wine connoisseur Fortunato over fifty years ago. Although he did not clearly explain his motive in the statements made before his wife and family, he admitted to sealing Fortunato in the catacombs. This seemingly good man lured the unsuspecting Fortunato into the Catacombs claiming that he was storing wine there. Fortunato, drunk and naïve at the time, fell into the trap. After that admission Montresor medical condition took a turn for the worse. He repeatedly through gasping breaths said, “I… Fortunato … seal … mortar…bricks… clever plan… no one knows.” Moments later Montresor died of heart failure. Italian police are investigating as to if this is in fact how Fortunato spent his last hours. “UNFORTUNATE” TRUTH COMES OUT CHIEF OF POLICE TO CONTINUE INVESTIGATION “I am confident that our force will perform a swift and thorough investigation of the case to settle this as quickly as possible for the families of both parties involved.” Because Montresor was extremely sick and running a high fever at the time, doctors say that a possibility exists that he was speaking in delirium when he admitted to committing a brutal homicide. However, this doctor says, “In my past experiences, I have found that dying patients usually discuss issues of importance to them in their last minutes on Earth. Although it is possible, that he was delirious in making those claims is highly unlikely, especially considering that we know that the victim mysteriously disappeared around the time to which the patient was referring. Private services will be held for Montresor some time next week. Investigations and searches of the catacombs will begin immediately in a search for the body. CATACOMBS NEWSPAPER TABLE OF CONTENTS

Edgar Allan Poe FOREMAN OF FORESHADOWING Edgar Allan Poe’s works are practically dripping with foreshadowing. When one rereads the “Cask of Amontillado,” that he could not guess what would happen from the clues baffles him. Even the character’s name, Fortunaro, foreshadows that he might not be very “fortunate.” Another example of foreshadowing is Fortunato’s saying, “Enough, the cough is a mere nothing; it will not kill me. I shall not die of a cough.” This hints to the reader that perhaps Fortunato would die that night. Montresor even shows Fortunato the weapon that he would use to murder him beforehand when Fortunato asks him if he is “not of the masons,” a secret society. Montresor replies that he is. When Fortunato asks for a sign, Montresor, using the double meaning of mason to his advantage, shows him his trowel that he would use to seal Fortunato in the catacombs for eternity. Montresor’s family arms also show things to come. His arms are, “a huge human foot d’or, in a field azure; the foot crushes a serpent whose fangs are imbedded in the heel.” I, knowing what happens in the story, believe that the foot represents Montresor. We know that Fortunato has done something to irritate Montresor. This represents the fangs imbedded in the heel. If we used this symbolism, we could predict that the foot, Montresor, would crush the snake Fortunato. Edgar Allan Poe MAGAZINE TABLE OF CONTENTS

AARON NEW HOME RUN KING NEWSPAPER TABLE OF CONTENTS RUTH”S RECORD SHATTERED With one awe-inspiring swing of the bat at an Al Downing slider, Hank Aaron became baseball’s all-time home run leader. Fighting off racial discrimination and hate, he succeeded in reaching what people once thought an impossible record. Hank Aaron, who seemed more relieved than happy, said, “I was in my own little world at the time.” Aaron rounded the base, shaking hands with first baseman Steve Garvey and second baseman Davey Lopes. Suddenly two kids ran out onto the field to join Aaron in his triumphant trot around the base path. Although they gave security a great fright, they had good intentions and meant no harm to Hammerin’ Hank. Everyone present will remember last night as one of the most historic ones in baseball history. Hank Aaron

ECHO!!!!!!! PEOPLE HEAR GUNFIRE IN FOREST; PARROTS FLEE People camping in the woods reportedly heard machine-gun fire from somewhere in the woods of Bigtree Park. They then reported seeing a flock of parrots, obviously frightened, screeching and flying around wildly. Park ranger Ned Nogun appeared visibly devastated about the gunfire, “I don’t understand how this happened. This has always been such a … such a peaceful place. And now this? I am really at a loss.” Police have begun an investigation to determine the source of the gunfire. They expect that it is the work of poachers looking to shoot animals in the protected area. Henriqueta Lisboa LESS IS MORE In the poem “Echo,” Henriqueta Lisboa gives the reader very little information to create a better experience for the reader. “Great uproar invading the forest” and “strafing space steely screams” lead us to believe that someone has fired a machine gun in a peaceful forest, but she never actually plainly says that. She leaves it to the reader’s imagination to determine what really is happening in the poem. This forces the reader to think about it more and try to use their brain to figure out what is going on. As the reader we must imagine if it is shooting that scared the parrots, and, if so, we wonder why they are shooting the parrots. This prevents the reader from simply reading the words of the poem but not actually “digesting” them in the way that the author wants us to. Henriqueta Lisboa MAGAZINE TABLE OF CONTENTS

Carl Sandburg ALL IN THE ANECDOTES From the selection from The Lincoln Preface, I learned that Abraham Lincoln was a very complex, interesting person. Carl Sandburg beautifully illustrated this through anecdotes. Simply stating that he was a unique person does not come close to the power of actually showing it. We learn that he is a kind, friendly person when he met the author of Uncle Tom’s Cabin, and said, “So you’re the little woman who wrote the book that made this great war. I do love an open fire: I always had one at home.” Sandburg illustrated that he is willing to do what is right for the country no matter what saying, “I will violate the Constitution if it is necessary to save the union.” He also told the Secretary of Treasury, “Not to bother himself about the Constitution. Say that I have that sacred instrument here at the White House, and I am guarding it with great care.” Additionally, this story shows that he is a peaceful person. He said, “Voorhees, don’t it seem strange to you that I, who could never so much as cut off the head of a chicken, should be elected, or selected, into the midst of all this blood? These interesting, and sometimes humorous stories both entertain the reader and convey the author’s message. This is what makes Carl Sandburg one of our all-time greatest authors. “KING” OF THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. GIVES ROUSING SPEECH IN D.C. Yesterday Martin Luther King, Jr. gave an inspiring speech, “I Have a Dream,” in Washington D.C. He caught the attention of millions of Americans, telling them that, “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” More than two hundred thousand supporters of the civil rights movement gathered in our nation’s capital to see the great leader deliver his address. One white onlooker said, “In the past I have always been …well, not anti black, but pro white. I guess you could call me a racist. I came today to see this man speak just to be a part of it and find out what was going on in our nation. He has forever changed my opinion. Any race who can produce someone like that deserves equal treatment.” Another one of King’s supporters, this one black, said, “This is only the beginning of things to come. I promise you that we will not rest until we achieve complete equality.” Well, this historic day has solidified King’s position as the true leader of this movement for equality and just treatment of all people. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. REACHING OUT TO THE WORLD Martin Luther King, Jr.’s speech, “I Have a Dream” was highly effective in accomplishing its goal of building its support for the Civil Rights movement. Dr. King did this by speaking out individually to as many groups of people as he could. He addresses “the sons of former slaves, and the sons of former slave owners” in Georgia; he makes reference to the governor of Alabama. Additionally he used flattery by saying something great about their state to persuade the people of some states to adopt his views. This man referred to the “prodigious hilltops of New Hampshire” and “the mighty mountains of New York,” and the great things that we associate with a handful of other states. However, the most important thing that he tried to convey was that he was not just trying to make peace and equality between blacks and whites. King wanted to bridge the gaps between Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, and various other cultural groups against which people sometimes discriminate. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. ROBERT FROST THE ROAD NOT TAKEN “The Road Not Taken” is a fabulous poem, but is its author Robert Frost literally talking about a fork in the road in the woods? Most people do not think so; many believe that he is referring to his own career. In deciding his career choice, Frost found, “Two roads diverged in a yellow wood.” One of his options was to follow a conventional career route and become a doctor or lawyer or one of the “traditional” occupations. Instead, he took “the road less traveled” and became a poet. This was a much riskier choice than taking the other road was. To wander off the path would have been very easy for him. However, he continued pursuing his dream. Eventually his efforts paid off, and Robert Frost became one of the most beloved poets in American history. Robert Frost MAGAZINE TABLE OF CONTENTS

NEWSPAPER TABLE OF CONTENTS WONDROUS WORKING WOMAN ANNIE JOHNSON BEATS ODDS TO BECOME SUCCESFUL Annie Johnson basically had nothing in her favor. She never received an education, was a single mother, and was a black in the highly prejudiced South. However, she overcame all of this to become a successful businesswoman. To understand her story, one first must understand Annie Johnson. Probably the best word to describe her is proud. Ms. Johnson was just too proud to become a domestic worker or some low position like that. Instead, she examined her talents and decided what she could do with them. She knew that she could “mix groceries well enough to scare hunger away from starving a man.” Using this skill, she made meat pies and brought them to the cotton gins to sell during lunch. As soon as the workers got out for lunch, she dropped the pies into boiling water and allowed the aroma to float to the workers. Those pies not sold she took to the lumber mill and sold there. One of Johnson’s loyal customers said, “I always be the first one see Miss Annie. She makes ‘bout the best pies I ever tasted in m’life. All us worke’s love Miss Annie. She probl’y makes real good money, too.” Annie herself said, “I personal don’ think my food be too fancy, but those men o’er at the factories sure seem to like it. It sure makes me feel real good to feed them and me some money all atta same time. I always tell me babies, ‘Babies, your mommy be cutting a new path for us. Things gonna be real good real soon.’”

“Is There Anybody There?” MAN MET AT DOOR BY PHANTOM LISTENERS Last night a traveler, who has asked us not to identify him, approached a house at which he had an appointment to keep. He insists that supernatural forces were amidst in the house. He said, “I did not see or hear anything in particular, but I felt it. I really felt something. I could feel them looking at me … and… and I really can’t talk about this.” This man, obviously shaken, began to weep openly. Police are planning further investigation into the house. Chief of police Arnold Jackson said, “This is definitely not the first time that we have had reports of mysterious happenings in that general area. That there is actually a ghostly force at work is unlikely, but we suspect the possibility of burglars hiding in the house.” This Traveler, however, vehemently denies that possibility. “What I saw,” he said, “was not of this world. Walter de la Mare Like the author of “Echo,” de la Mare uses a “less-is-more” approach to his poem “The Listeners.” He does not tell us who the Traveler is nor why the Traveler is there. He also gives us very little information about the phantoms themselves. About the only thing that we know is that the Traveler had an appointment because the Travelers says, “Tell them I came, and no one answered, that I kept my word.” This surprisingly adds effect to the poem by making us to think more about what is happening and really to use our brains much more than we usually would. Ray Bradbury MAN OF MORALS • Again, Ray Bradbury has pleased readers all over the world with “The Golden Kite, the Silver Wind.” He has once again written a funny story that delivers a powerful moral. He tells us to care more about our lives and the lives of others than obsessing with competition. Those people in the story obsess with building walls to such an extent that “Sickness spread in the city like a pack of evil dogs. Shops closed. The population, now working steadily for endless months upon the changing of the walls, resembled Death himself…” This is an example of what happens when we obsess with beating our friends in competition, just on a much grander scale. With all of his books and stories, he brings happiness and understanding of what to do in situations. MAGAZINE TABLE OF CONTENTS

NEWSPAPER TABLE OF CONTENTS NEW HERO OF GREECE Perseus, the boy who the fates foretold would kill his father, has remarkably slain the Gorgon Medusa. Reportedly, he went out in search of the head of the monster to get as a present. This hero claims to have received divine help from the great gods Athena and Hermes. They gave him guidance as to how to slay Medusa; her two Gorgon sisters were immortal. Hence he could not kill them. Hermes gave him a sword that could not bend or break from the Gorgon’s scales. Athena allegedly gave him a breastplate that he could use as a mirror so that Medusa would not immediately turn him to stone. Additionally, we have heard unconfirmed reports that Perseus saved the lovely princess Andromeda and has taken her for his wife. Perseus is still recovering from his expedition and was unavailable for comment. However, his mother said, “I am so angry with that young man. He put himself in danger for no reason. If he makes it back alive, I’ll … I’ll … kill him.” Of course, Perseus is the child associated with the well-known story of his grandfather Acrisius who locked his daughter Danae up so that the prophecy that her son would kill him would not prove true. YET ANOTHER CHANGE “The Golden Kite, Silver Wind” Today, our Mandarin has announced that we will be changing the walls of our fair city to the shape of a scabbard to sheathe the sword-shaped city near ours. This is the continuation of an ongoing building battle between our city and theirs. Our city is showing signs of suffering because of this terrible battle in which we have engaged ourselves. Several rebels have called for an end to this battle. Our Mandarin has warned them that all people objecting to his rule will die. He released a statement, “I truly believe that that this is for the good of NEWSPAPER TABLE OF CONTENTS

YET ANOTHER CHANGE PEOPLE SPEAK OUT AGAINST MANDARIN our city. If the people hold strong during this tough time, I am confident we will prevail.” One of the rebels, who asked us not to use his name, said, “This is truly the collapse of our city. If our Mandarin does not stop this immediately, all of us will perish. Our wall’s shape is no indication of the status of our city; the people’s happiness is, and I know that our people are unhappy.” This battle between the cities will in all likelihood continue for the foreseeable future. “Rosa Parks: My Story” is a short, nonfiction story. This story is short and to the point. Rosa Parks tries to get her readers into the story. She writes with great detail to try to give you a picture of what is going on. With this writing style, Rosa Parks gets you to feel what she is going through and what is going through her mind. “People always say that I didn’t give up my seat because I was tired, but that isn’t true. I was not physically tired, but I was only tired of giving in,” said Parks. Chief Dan George delivered a sad speech about the struggle of Native Americans to get their land back. yesterday, saying, “There is a longing in the heart of my people to reach out and grasp that which is needed for survival,” said Chief Dan George. The fight for their land is becoming the biggest fight they will ever have. Yesterday, the battle went into the courts. “I am a chief, but my power to make war is gone, and the only weapon left to me is speech,” said Chief Dan George. Chief Dan George and his people will have to use that weapon to convince many people that the land rightfully belongs to the Native Americans. Today, at 3:45 P.M., the Native Americans are taking their case to the District Court Appeal. If they are successful in winning, they will be appealed to the State Supreme Court. One of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s most famous creations is Sherlock Holmes. With Sherlock Holmes, Doyle creates stories about mystery and suspense. With Sherlock’s cunning ability to solve murders, he figures out the mystery of the murder in “The Red-headed League.” “The Red-headed League” has both mystery and suspense. Doyle’s unique writing style allows the reader to interact with the mystery of the story. As you read along, Doyle builds up the suspense. By doing this, you can’t stop reading his story. You want read to the end of the story to find out the mystery of the murder. Doyle gives you many clues to the mystery such as that the man’s trouser knees were worn. KEAY DAVIDSON CAN YOU QUOTE THAT? In “Caucasian Mummies Mystify Chinese,” Keay Davidson adds effect to his nonfiction article by including many interviews with the people who actually participated. For instance, most people find the discoveries of the Caucasian mummies surprising, but we learn that top scientists like Victor Mair also seemed surprised. He said, “The questions kept nagging at me: Who are those people? How did they get out here at such an early date?” We also learned about DNA analysis directly from Luigi Luca Cavalli-Sforza who said, “It’s a very tricky type of analysis. Old DNA is generally very damaged.” MAGAZINE TABLE OF CONTENTS

Yusef Koumunyakaa SO MANY SIMILES • Yusef Koumunyakaa makes his writing powerful and effective by using a great number of similes in “Slam, Dunk, & Hook.” He describes the basketball’s entering the hoop as being “like silk.” • Then, he described the players as being like story book sea monsters poised in midair. • Again he uses a simile to describe how the players “glide like a sparrow hawk.” • These figures of speech alone make his works of literature exciting and entertaining to read. Killer Birds?If It Happened In England, Why Not Here? This is the question we find ourselves asking all around the world as literally millions of birds attacking innocent civilians in England. “It is an outrage!” says Nat Hocken, a farmer whose house was swarmed by these hostile creatures. The sad thing out here is that the people in the cities are all being protected from these pests, but what about the poor farm folk? They are left to fend for themselves. “I had friends that did not take this seriously, they thought it was just an act and went out and had a shooting contest. Not one of them survived! That is why we think that we need to stick together and form an alliance to keep this kind of thing from happening again.” explains Mrs. Hocken. NEWSPAPER TABLE OF CONTENTS (Continue on Next Page)

Killer Birds? Continued One question that has the officials stumped is the fact that these birds attack with the tide. They actually come in with the tide and fly back out when the tide goes out. The same is true for the land birds, who rest in trees or on fences when the tide is out. “These birds,” says a source, “are like little suicide fighters. They dive-bomb people without a thought of what may happen to them. It is almost like they are being possessed by some outside force.” There are other people like her that think the Russian have poisoned the birds and are forcing them to attack England, and soon the rest of the world. Others believe that this is nothing more than the sudden cold front coming through so early in the year and so quickly. “Whatever it is,” says an anonymous political figure, “it needs to be ended quickly with the smallest possible amount of casualties.” NEWSPAPER TABLE OF CONTENTS

Daphne Du Maurier • Daphine Du Maurier’s short story “The Birds” is really suspenseful. A man tries to save and protect his family from killer birds that are in thousands. After every sentence you get a chill that something strange has just happened. You don’t know if anyone has died or has been injured. “The brushing of those wings against the door.” What do you think is going to happen? As you try to guess on every sentence you read, you don’t know if the birds are going to attack, or just resting. You read about Nat trying to save himself and his family from the birds. He is quiet and shrewd when he hears the birds. Even after the last sentence you wonder what is going to happen next with his family. This makes the story extremely exciting to read. Handle With Care • Naomi Shihab Nye is telling us a valuable lesson. In his poem “Shoulders,” he says that family and friends are the most important things in your life. The man is trying to care for his child by not waking him up when he is sleeping. He doesn’t want to hurt his child either. The man avoids everything he possibly can to try to help his son. It shows how much love and care he has. Naomi’s poem is wonderful because it teaches other people to give care for your children. You should try to do anything possible to have your child be happy. It shows symbolism because not only does the man care for people, everyone care for people. Just yesterday the famous hunter, Rainsford, returned home after mysteriously disappearing from a ship carrying a few hunters. He has told news reporters that he was stranded on Ship-Trap Island, the dreaded island for sailors. There, he said, he met a monster, a human who was one of the greatest hunters of all time. His name was General Zaroff. He had hunted every kind of animal on the earth, and still he yearned for a challenge. Then it hit him. He would hunt humans, animals who were intelligent and could provide him with a good, hard chase. “He was crazy,” exclaimed Rainsford. “He kidnapped strong sailors and used them as pray. But this prey was a match for him.” Rainsford had defeated the terrorizing, blood thirsty killer, by out smarting him at his own game. Rainsford killed Zaroff’s helper,Ivan, first, along with one or two of his dogs, too. “Ivan was enormous. He could have ripped me apart with his bare hands if he got me,” says Rainsford remembering the giant man. “But with the knife that was given to me as my weapon, and a branch of a plant, and some grapevine, I was able to lessen my threat by one step.” THE HUNTER BECOMES THE HUNTED Island of the Human Hunter NEWSPAPER TABLE OF CONTENTS

THE HUNTER BECOMES THE HUNTED CONT. He was nearly killed at one point, but it seemed to him that the ruthless hunter wanted the hunt to go on for more than one day of the three-day period in which he had to kill Rainsford. According to the rules of this “Most Dangerous Game,” General Zaroff had three days to kill Rainsford. He was armed with his assistant, guns, and his hunting dogs. Rainsford was armed with one day’s rations, and a knife, but the skilled hunter could not kill the evasive Rainsford. At the end of the third day, Rainsford went back to the mansion of the hunter, slipped into his bedroom window to find Zaroff waiting for him. They dueled to death. In the outcome, Rainsford was victorious and Zaroff was killed. Thanks to the great hunter Rainsford, the island of Ship-Trap is no longer feared by sailors at all. NEWSPAPER TABLE OF CONTENTS

“He was a ghost, a lost spirit, who’s memories appeared in front of him.” said “The Talkative Man.” This man met a ghost. The ghost took over the mind of his driver, making him seem crazy. “I was shut into the corner of my own mind, aware of the fact that this thing was controlling my voice, my body, and everything else,” says the driver, Doss. “Its scary. You have no control over yourself. And what makes it worse is you’re aware the entire time. You watch your life sort of like a TV screen.” The talkative man made conversation with the spirit, talking about “current” news to the ghost, but unknown news to him. They talked about the king of the time and of how the ghost died, which the ghost himself apparently knew. The passenger got the ghost out of Doss’s body by telling him to think hard about his wife. TEMPLE HAUNTED BY POSSESING GHOST By some miracle, to the ghost’s eyes she appeared walking down the hill. “I don’t quite understand what happened, but if you have some idea I’d be more than happy to hear it,” says a confused “The Talkative Man”. No one really knows what happened but it is apparent that it is something supernatural. There is a full investigation taking place at the temple to find out for sure what may have happened. Richard Connell Greatest of Writing, The Most Dangerous of All Games The great author Richard Connell, has dreamt up one of the greatest masterpieces of all time, in a short story that will imprint itself in your memory for a life time. He thought up the great Rainsford, along with Zaroff, the murderous human hunter. This man brought an unimaginable story into existence. With his sense of writing, adventurous mind, and amazing word using skills, he creates a story that will terrify you, mystify you, and horrify you out of your skin. You read about the treacherous Ship-Trap Island, feared by all sailors world-wide, and of the skilled hunter who becomes the prey of another hunter, the hunter of humans. Though he put to death some of the strongest, most brutal sailors, he could not match his own kind, a hunter with the knowledge of many hunting techniques. Where does a man get such ideas like this, and why do they have such a powerful meaning, enough to imprint this great story in our minds and hearts forever? Ishmael ReedReader Beware;You Are In For a Scare You all probably know Ishmael Reed to be a superb writer by his many pieces of literature. If you don’t then I would definitely recommend reading some of his work. He uses wonderful dialect to express himself in “Beware: Do Not Read This Poem” such as “it has drawn in yr feet, back off from this poem, it has drawn in yr legs, back off from this poem.” He uses the title, “Beware: Do Not Read This Poem”, to catch the readers attention as well as to make the reader continue reading to see why Ishmael selected this title for this poem. He makes you think that you are becoming a part of the poem, like “getting sucked into a good book”. But you have got to feel sorry for the other girls out there who worked so hard. I think it went well out there and we gave it all we’ve got, and that is what really counts. I think that the only reason that we won like we did was because of the whole team and not just me, because it could just as easily have been them in the spotlight and not me.” says Rosedale. From 1825 to about 1830, Whitman attended public schools in Brooklyn, which constituted his entire formal education. At the age of eleven or twelve, he went to work, first as an office boy and then as an apprentice printer, beginning on the Long Island Patriot and moving on to the Long Island Star, both of which were published in Brooklyn. When his father moved the family back to Long Island, Whitman remained in Brooklyn, continuing to work for the Star until May 12, 1835. Another attribute that he has is determination. He was determined to become a great author even though he was accused of being insane. His poem, “I Hear America Singing,” makes you stop and think about what it is like to be a working person in America.
