1. Arts Survey Syllabus and Overview

2. Objectives • To introduce students to new genres, cultures, and innovations in art. • To provide a better understanding of the patterns that occur in all arts and to understand what makes Western music our dominant ear. • To appreciate different aspects of art for the effort and talent related to the art and their incorporation into our everyday lives. • To relate to the arts in a psycho-emotional way as to better understand the reason behind an artful expression.

3. Expectations • Remain quiet when the teacher is talking or addressing the class. • I do not like to strain my voice. I do not want to waste time trying to speak over you. I will teach with my voice at the normal level, and I will not repeat myself on account of noise. I do permit talking entering and at the finish of class. • Treat others the way you want to be treated. • Treat your peers, teachers, and administrators with the same respect you consider yourself. There are courteous ways to go about saying things. • Back-talking is non-negotiable. I am only going to tell you things in the best interest of the class. If you have a concern regarding what I have to say, please see me after class. If you make this a disruption during class, it will be dealt with swiftly. • Be responsible for yourself. • Do not depend on others for materials, assignments, or due dates. You are at the age that you should begin being mature adults and treated as such. If you forget something, it’s not anyone’s fault but your own. • Be on time! As you will hear me say a lot…”Early is on time, on time is late, and late is never acceptable.” I start on time so that we may end on time.

4. Materials • Class Fee - $10 • Art materials and supplies • Recorders • Pencil/Pen • 3 Ring Binder • Loose Leaf Paper • Handouts given in class

5. Procedure • Most likely, there will be some sort of music playing or an article on the student’s table as they enter. The students will sit down and place their things not needed for the class under their chair. (Not under the table! Under your chair.) They are to begin working on the journal immediately. I do not mind the students talking as long as they are staying on task. • When the tardy bell rings, the students will quiet down, and I will begin taking roll. Once I finish roll call, the students have one (1) minute to finish up. What is not finished will be completed at home. Journals will be collected the first of class after Friday’s journal entry. If a student is absent, they are still responsible for an article report to be done at home and submitted on their return to class. (Independent article is to follow classroom guidelines. [handwritten, one page, etc.])

6. Procedure (Continued) • Next, the teacher will give a lecture on the day’s topic. • A handout will be given, and the students must be engaged in the lecture to attain the answers for the blanks in the handout. The vocabulary for the quizzes will be designated as mentioned in class, and is to be written in the blank space provided. • If the teacher suspects that a student is not listening or is copying instead of staying engaged, they may be removed to sit alone elsewhere in the room. (Space will be provided for additional note taking or to copy drawings from the whiteboard. This is highly encouraged.)

7. Procedure (Final”) • Third, the students will have some kind of reinforcement activity such as a crossword, small art project, etc. to review the day’s material. • Lastly, if there is any homework to be done, the students will then note it. I will not permit make-up homework because of forgetting the assignment, because I will stop class to have the student write it down! • The students may talk quietly at the close of class and leave when the bell rings. The students are to push their chairs up upon leaving.

8. Grading • Participation – 20% • Vocabulary Quizzes – 20% • Tests – 20% • Journals – 20% • Projects – 20%

Please stay involved with what is going on with the student so that you are informed with what is going on in ALL of their classes. Parent involvement is also a great incentive for your student to want to do well and get recognition from you for a job well done.
