Blog4: Cardiaclife.net WHAT IS A DEFIBRILLATOR? A defibrillator is an electronic device that delivers an electric pulse to the heart for alleviating certain disturbances. The main object is to change a fibrillation, or irregular rhythm, into a slower & steadier beat which can be managed by a care provider. The shock comes from an electric current channelized through the chest of the patient via electrodes. The current causes the heart muscle to contract, hopefully bringing it back to a natural pace. The most common cause of ventricular fibrillation is cardiac arrest. In this situation, the ventricles are functioning in a disorganized way causing the heart to stop pumping sufficient blood. Atrial fibrillation is other form of fibrillation which is more common. It is a disorder which causes the upper chambers of the heart called atria, to shiver rather than beating gradually. Nowadays the automated external defibrillator has become a fixture in local places such as sports arenas, stadiums, airports, cinema halls, railway platforms etc. When using the AED defibrillator, it automatically concludes whether a shock is required & selects the suitable level of energy. Therefore automated external defibrillatorsare an effective tool for those who are not in the medical field and wish to keep a defibrillator on hand in case of a sudden cardiac attack. Heart defibrillators have even become common in homes as a life saving machine. Research &Studies reveal that majority of heart attacks happens within the home, but until recently the defibrillator was a massive machine to keep there. Now with portable devices, family members have more methods for saving the life of a loved one.
