6 aims of punishment Protection Retribution Deterrence, Reformation Vindication Reparation
Protection Society must be protected from dangerous criminals. Criminals lose their freedom so others do not have to worry about their activities.
Retribution (revenge) People deserve to take revenge on the criminal. Giving the criminal what they deserve. An example would be the teaching ‘an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth’.
Deterrence Put someone off committing crime a crime, teach them a lesson
Reformation A punishment to change (reform) the criminal so they learn to be a good personand change their future.
Vindication People must see that laws are upheld and respected Those who break them should be punished to show society will uphold justice.
Reparation The criminal should pay back the victim/ society They might do community service or apologise to their victim.
