  9. HOW CAN YOU AVOID JOINING A GANG? • 1. Identity • Gang members cannot achieve an identity in their environment, so they gain it in the gang culture. They often visualize themselves as warriors against the outside world, protecting their neighbourhood. • 2. Protection • Joining a gang in a community with several gangs offers considerable protection from violence and attack from rival gangs. • 3. Family • Studies indicate that a tight family structure is lacking in the home environment. Gang activity offers that closeness, that sense of family that is often lacking in the home. • 4. Intimidation • Membership can become very dangerous at this level of "recruitment." New members are forced to join by threats, violent beatings, and initiations in order to increase membership.

  10. What can your parents or carers do? • •Talk to your child and listen • • Encourage them to get involved in positive activities and to think about their future employment • • Get involved in your child’s school activities • • Know your child’s friends and their families • • Always know where your child is and who they are with • • Help them to cope with pressure and how to deal with conflict without use of violence • • Speak to them about the serious consequences that occur from violent or illegal behaviour. Help them to understand the dangers of being in a gang and find constructive alternative ways to use their time • • Keep lines of communication open • • Be aware of what your child is doing on the internet • • Look for ways of disciplining children that do not involve harshness, anger or violence • • Work with other parents and schools to watch their behaviour • • Contact local voluntary organisations that provide mentoring and other support for young people • • Talk about your child’s behaviour with their school and other parents

  11. Local Democracy • Who is your local MP? • What does an MP do? • What does a councillor do? • What would you ask a local councillor to change about your area? • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PK3zGoKq5iw&safe=active • - Local Democracy week
