Leadership Chapter 1
Concept 1: Leadership is difficult to define “Always, is seems, the concept of leadership eludes us or turns up in another form to taunt us again with its slipperiness and complexity. So we have invented an endless proliferation of terms to deal with it… and still the concept is not sufficiently defined”- Bennis, 1959
Concept 3: Leadership can be a “social” process • Formally and informally selected leaders can exist in a social setting, selected by the followers in either a formal or informal setting
Concept 4: Leadership can have influence over a willing group
Concept 7: Direct Leadership • Involves attempts to influence followers directly via conversation, electronic means, or other interaction
Concept 8: Indirect Leadership • Referred to as cascading, when a leader influences those without direct interaction • Can take form of programs, attitudes, or managerial systems • Influence happens due to belief systems
Theoretical differences between leading and managing • Bennis and Nanus (1985); Zaleznik (1977)- leadership and management are different and mutually exclusive • Mintzberg (1973)- Leadership is just one of 10 managerial roles • Kotter (1990)- Managing seeks to produce order, leading seeks to produce organizational change • Rost (1991)- Management is a relationship between manager and subordinates. Leadership has multidirectional influence
Indicators of Leadership Effectiveness • Performance of the organization • Follower perceptions and effectiveness • Leader’s contribution to processes as perceived by outsiders • The individual leader’s success as a leader
