  1. Christopher Columbus By Kydi Sornson

  2. Who I Was • Born in 1451 in Genoa, Italy • Childhood: • Respectful , but impoverished family • Limited education • Eldest of 5 children [3 brothers,1 sister] • Son of a wool merchant • As an Adult: • My goal was to be an explorer and I worked as a map maker • I wanted to find a faster trade route to the Indies • My Family: I got married twice and I had 2 sons • I died in 1506

  3. Why Was I Important • I was the first person to find the Americas, but I thought it was the Indies. • The Indies had riches that I wanted. • I wanted a new route to the Indies because a war shut off the existing route. • I discovered what is now the Bahamas and surrounding islands. • I sailed for Spain to find the Indies for King Ferdinand and Queen Isabellain1492, even though out I had to wait 6 years before going on my first adventure. • I claimed San Salvador for Spain.

  4. Impact I had I started the Columbian Exchange like finding new foodsand trading horses. It affected the population of 5 continents. On my 2nd voyage, I established a Spanish colony in Haiti to search for gold. I discovered pearls, which were new to Europe. I greatly changed how Native Americans lived and died (from diseases) and they were forced to be slaves.

  5. My Journey On my 1st journey ,I left Palos, Spain on August 3,1492. Stopped first at the Canary Islands for supplies. Sailed across the Atlantic Ocean on 3 ships , The Nina, The Pinta, and the Santa Maria [which I sailed on] It took 37 days to cross the Atlantic Ocean. Arrived on a tiny island I namedSan Salvadoron October 12,1492 When I reached San Salvador , I thought I reached Asia. I made 4 journeys total.

  6. HowITraveled • Cats sailed with me to take care of the ship rats. • I had to take dried, salted meat. • Sometimes it was so calm there was no wind to push me and my crew forward. • All of my sailors wanted to abandon me because it was taking too long. • My boats ran into seaweed during the trip and it made travel difficult. I traveled by ship. 1st voyage:-3 ships and 100 men. 2nd voyage:-17 ships-1,200 people to become colonists. 3rd voyage:-6 ships. 4th voyage:-4 ships and 150 men.

  7. Interesting facts/unknown facts When I was young, I was a pirate, and my friends drowned in a war, but I survived. I insisted I discovered the Indies. I only lived for 55 years. I got arrested on one of my islands in 1500. On my 4th adventure it only took me 20 days to cross the Atlantic Ocean. I had really really bad arthritis.
