  3. Undergraduate studies • BS in Optometry • Clinical practice • Volunteering with Lions Club • Thesis • Carried out ~ 300 visual exams among school-aged children. • Results presented at First National Congress of Optometry of the Ecuadorian Optometric Society.

  4. Graduate studies • Did not think about pursuing a PhD until late in my MPH. • Mentor: Fernando Ortega, MD, PhD • Doctoral program had a great theoretical component • I was GTA for three years. • I was working as data analyst for local health department concurrently. Great field experience!

  5. Postdoctoral training • Taught at WOU (BS in Community Health) • Strengthen community partnerships • Mentoring undergraduate Latino students to pursue MPH • RWJF New Connections Annual Coaching Clinic • PRIDE @ IBACH • Network of Latino Health Disparities researchers • Training in manuscript and grant writing • Balancing work/family

  6. Current position @ OSU • .5 FTE Assistant Professor, Ethnic Studies & International Health • .5 FTE Associate Director of Research, Center for Latino/a Studies and Engagement (CL@SE). • Juggling teaching, research, and administrative responsibilities.

  7. My research interests • Health inequalities (disparities), • Access to health care • Public participation in health/health care, • Migration and health • Healthy environments

  8. Advice…my two cents • Start making connections with faculty and more senior students early in your academic programs. • Become affiliated with professional organizations and go to conferences. • Take leadership positions • As early as a PhD student, start serving as a reviewer for journals; conference abstracts.
