Mentoring Of Early Career Minorities In Health-related Research Daniel López-Cevallos, Ph.D. Center for Latino/a Studies and Engagement Oregon State University APA Convention July 31, 2013
PhD career timeline • BS in Optometry (2001) • MPH (2004) • PhD (2008) • Grad. Cert. GIS (2008) • PRIDE (2012-2013) • Mentoring Researchers in Latino Health Disparities
Undergraduate studies • BS in Optometry • Clinical practice • Volunteering with Lions Club • Thesis • Carried out ~ 300 visual exams among school-aged children. • Results presented at First National Congress of Optometry of the Ecuadorian Optometric Society.
Graduate studies • Did not think about pursuing a PhD until late in my MPH. • Mentor: Fernando Ortega, MD, PhD • Doctoral program had a great theoretical component • I was GTA for three years. • I was working as data analyst for local health department concurrently. Great field experience!
Postdoctoral training • Taught at WOU (BS in Community Health) • Strengthen community partnerships • Mentoring undergraduate Latino students to pursue MPH • RWJF New Connections Annual Coaching Clinic • PRIDE @ IBACH • Network of Latino Health Disparities researchers • Training in manuscript and grant writing • Balancing work/family
Current position @ OSU • .5 FTE Assistant Professor, Ethnic Studies & International Health • .5 FTE Associate Director of Research, Center for Latino/a Studies and Engagement (CL@SE). • Juggling teaching, research, and administrative responsibilities.
My research interests • Health inequalities (disparities), • Access to health care • Public participation in health/health care, • Migration and health • Healthy environments
Advice…my two cents • Start making connections with faculty and more senior students early in your academic programs. • Become affiliated with professional organizations and go to conferences. • Take leadership positions • As early as a PhD student, start serving as a reviewer for journals; conference abstracts.
