  1. Apuntes 27-28 de mayo El pretérito imperfecto de subjuntivo The pastsubjunctive El jefe quería que despidiéramos a dos empleados. The boss wanted us to fire two employees. El profesor le dijo que estudiara los apuntes y el libro. The professor told him to study the notes and the book.

  2. The past subjunctive is used in much the same way as the present subjunctive, but it refers to past actions. The forms of the past subjunctive are based on the third-person plural (Uds., ellos/as) forms of the preterite. Take off the –ronof the verb form and you are left with the stem of the past subjunctive. third-person plural preterite formspast subjunctive stems hablaron → habla- comieron → comie- escribieron → escribie- durmieron → durmie- leyeron → leye- dijeron → dije- fueron → fue-

  4. Quisiera, the past subjunctive form of querer, is often used in polite requests. Yo quisiera hablar con el señor Gómez, por favor. I’d like to speak to Mr. Gomez, please. ¿Quisierasmás pastel? Would you like more cake?
