8. Class Rank vs GPA • Parent: What is the point of taking weighted classes if the universities look at unweighted core GPA? • Answer: Class rank is weighted. Universities and some scholarships look at both unweighted core course work and weighted class rank.

9. Dual Enrollment • Credit transfer to in-state and some out-of-state colleges • Check out the Course Equivalency Guide on AZ Transfer to see how credit transfers. • Dual Enrollment credit does not show up on Perry transcripts. Students must order their transcript from Chandler Gilbert CC

10. LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION • Required for many universities and scholarships • Follow the Process • Form available on-line (helpful to include resume) • Appointment with the counselor is recommended • Proactive – some programs require letters before fall break e.g. Common App, Quest Bridge, Flinn, Military Academy - Teacher input • What makes student stand apart • Give your recommender 2 weeks to complete the letter. Letters will not be written over Intersession breaks and does not count as the two week notice

COLLEGE ENTRANCE EXAMS • Universities - SAT or ACT Test scores may be sent to 4 colleges at no charge • Some Universities SAT Subject Tests (In-State Schools do not require them) Community College Placement Test (Asset or Accuplacer) • Additional Math Placement Tests may be given by universities

21. SAT Given 7 times per year ACT Given 6 times per SAT vs ACT Thanks to the changes to the SAT there are almost no differences between the two exams. Both tests have math and reading sections and have optional essays sections. The ACT test is slightly more complex, more advanced math You may have your test scores sent to 4 schools for free! • Fee waivers available for SAT & ACT (see Ms Phillips for additional information)

22. COLLEGE ADMISSIONS Automatic In-state University requirements: • Have a 3.0 un-weighted Core* GPA or better in the 16 corecourses and • No deficiencies in core courses (no “D”’s or “F”’s) There is a *Core GPA Calculator on the Career Center Website

In-State University Honors Program Most schools have higher admissions requirements • ASU separate application priority 11/1 • NAU separate application priority ? • UA no separate application, students will be invited to apply based on the information provided on their general admissions application

24. PRIVATE AND OUT OF STATE COLLEGES • When to apply – Check each school’s website – these vary significantly! • Highly selective schools have earlier deadline (Early Action, Early Decision) • Please - HAVE AN IN-STATE BACKUP PLAN!!

26. WUE WUE (pronounced “woo-wee”) is the Western Undergraduate Exchange, a program of the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE). Through WUE, students in western states may enroll in more than 140 two-year and four-year college institutions at a reduced tuition level: 150 percent of the institution's regular resident tuition. Several School in the following states participate: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, Wyoming.

27. DISABILITY RESOURCES The college disability service office coordinator/program advisor is responsible for evaluating and determining accommodation eligibility. 29. FEDERAL FINANCIAL AID • Apply AFTER October 1st senior year. Update annually • Parents Financial Aid Night October 26 • Get help completing the FAFSA on College Goal Sunday, typically the Saturday and Sunday following Super Bowl. Dates will be announced

30. SCHOLARSHIPS • Scholarship information is available on the Perry High Career Center web site. • Separate application is not required for in-state merit scholarships • Check College Website for additional scholarship opportunities • Apply Early and apply often!

31. A Few Things to Remember • Do not PAY anyone to help you with scholarships, FAFSA or college applications. Get help completing the FAFSA at College Goal Sunday (Saturday too) • Transcripts are now ordered on line from Parchment.com. Senior setting up their accounts in the Career Center this week and next. • Time Management is extremely important in the senior year. Students need to make time to research their post high school options and scholarships this fall!

32. Decision Making 101 • “Decision Making is a Process not an Event” • Visit Campuses over fall break - each one has a different personality and different characteristics • Keep applying for scholarships – lack of finances is a huge reason why students decide not to attend their preferred college • Apply now, get accepted, do financial aid, THEN decide where to attend.
