  2. Welcome to AP Lang! Monday: 10/30/17 Objective I can write an effective and convincing argument based on the requirements of a timed AP prompt. (CB 1) (W. 11-12.1) Instruction: • Timed Write The Great Gatsby: • Carefully read the prompt. • Annotate the passage specifically looking for the author’s TONE – you may write on the passage and prompt. • Carefully read the scoring guide. Highlight important aspects of what the test reader is looking for in an essay. Look closely at 8 (Effective-97%), 6 (Adequate-85%), 4 (Inadequate 75%) and 2 (Little Success 55%). • When you are finished writing your essay, review the essay using the check boxes on the scoring rubric. • Staple your essay, annotations, with the rubric on top and turn in. • If you have time left over, you may read quietly. Homework: • HW: Continue working on The Great Gatsby questions.

  3. Welcome to AP Lang! Tuesday: 10/31/17 Objective : I can apply the Toulmin method of argument while close reading Stephen King’s “Why We Crave Horror Movies”. (CB 1) I can write an effective and convincing rhetorical precis demonstrating my understanding of both the content and delivery of King’s argument. (W. 11-12.1) Warm Up: Quietly Close read and annotate Stephen King’s 1982 Article: “Why We Crave Horror Movies”. • Look specifically for King’s claim and how he supports the claim using the Toulmin method (Claim, Qualifiers, Reasons, Evidence, Warrents & Backing- feel free to review your chapt 7 notes) • If you finish annotating before your table: you may begin to draft your precis, but please save the questions to work on as a team. Collaborative: 1. Turn and talk: Do you CraveHorror Movies ? 2. In teams, discuss and answer the analysis questions. Independent/Critical Writing: 3. When finished, each student will write their own four point rhetorical precis, aim to have this done at the end of class. Closing task: Turn in questions and rhetorical precis for grading

Why We Crave Horror MoviesTurn and Talk: • Option 1: If you DO watch horror films, do you relate to/agree with King’s reasons that people watch these types of movies? • Option 2: If you DO NOT watch horror films, do you have a better understanding of why people do watch them, having read this essay?

Block Day: 11/1-2/17 Objective : I can determine the use of rhetorical devises in prose and poetry and write a rhetorical precis considering both the author’s technique and impact of the use of rhetorical devices. (R6) (W1) Warm Up- Collaborative: Review rhetorical device terms and come up with an example of your own. • Independent/Critical Writing: Read JFK’s speech and the passage from Julius Caesar, annotating specifically for rhetorical devices Write a rhetorical precis for each. Answer questions for Mark Twain Closing task: Turn in questions and rhetorical precis for gradingat the end of class.
