The students will be able to effectively communicate their results with other members of the class. 4. The students will be able to use PowerPoint software in an effective manner.
Lesson Plan #1 (continued) Assessment: Each group will come up with their own set of solutions to the New York City mosquito problem. Each group will design and develop a brief PowerPoint presentation that will be presented to the class. Within the presentation the students will be graded on the following: 1. Clarity of their presentation. 2. Are their solutions practical and applicable.
Lesson Plan #1 (continued) Introduction: 1.) The first part of the lesson consists of a brainstorming activtiy in which the students will be divided up into groups of 4-6 and asked to generate ideas as to what the answer to the following questions are: 1. What are some different types of mosquitoes and problems associated with them? 2. What types of habitats do mosquitoes live and thrive in? 3. What are some different ways in which to control mosquitoes?
Lesson Plan #1 (continued) Procedures: 1.) Next the students will be asked to perform research within their groups on the different types of mosquitoes, life cycles, diseases associated with mosquitoes, methods of control, and habitats of mosquitoes. (they will be asked to utilize the internet, magazines, journals, CD-ROM’s, encyclopedias, etc. to find the information for their research). 2.) The students will then be asked to determine what type(s) of mosquitoes were involved in the NYC case, disease(s) caused, and solutions to the problem.
Lesson Plan #1 (continued) Closure: 1.) The final activity for this lesson will involve the students within their groups creating their own original solutions to the NYC case within the following criteria: 1. Their solutions have to be practical and useable. 2. They cannot copy the solutions used in the actual case. 2.) The groups will create a brief PowerPoint presentation, presenting their results to the class. The presentation must be clearly done and presented in a professional manner.
Lesson Plan #1 (continued) Materials/Resources: 1. PowerPoint software 2. Science magazines and journals 3. Science CD-ROM’s 4.. Internet software
Lesson Plan #2 • Lesson #2 Subject: Science Grade Level: 8th Grade Theme: Mosquito Types/Lifecycles/Structures QCC’s: 1. Use process skills of observing, classifying, communicating, measuring, predicting, inferring, identifying, and manipulating variables. Also use skills of recording, analyzing and operationally defining, formulating models, experimenting, constructing hypotheses and drawing conclusions.
Lesson Plan #2 (continued) QCC’s. 2. Selects and uses multiple types of print and nonprint sources for information on science concepts.
Lesson Plan #2 (continued) Lesson Objectives: 1. Develop laboratory skills. 2. Become proficient with laboratory equipment. 3. Develop experimental skills and knowledge 4. Become proficient in public speaking..
Lesson Plan #2 (continued) Learner Outcomes: 1. The students will be able to identify the different phases of the mosquito lifecycle 2. The students will be able to identify the major structures of mosquitoes. 3. The students will be able to identify the different types of mosquitoes. 4. The students will be able to effectively communicate their results with other members of the class.
Lesson Plan #2 (continued) Assessment: The students will perform a mosquito collection if possible in which they will have to give the common and scientific name of each mosquito along with the habitats they live in. If the collection is not able to be done then they will have to be able to identify the different types of mosquitoes through visual means (actual samples, pictures, etc.) The collection will be graded on the correctness of the information and visual clarity (is the collection easy to follow and are the words easy to read.) The students will also be asked to write a brief report that includes the different types of mosquitoes, major structures and functions, different stages of the life cycle, and what takes place during each stage.
Lesson Plan #2 (continued) Introduction: 1.) The students will be asked to discuss what are some different types of mosquitoes they know of (they can use the information from the brainstorming activity in lesson #1). 2.) After this the teacher will present some type of visual presentation (PowerPoint, video, slide show, etc.) and discuss with the class what the major types of mosquitoes are, their structures, and life cycles..
Lesson Plan #2 (continued) Procedures: 1.) The students will either be asked to, depending on which activity is possible, perform a mosquito collection and identify common name, scientific name, habitat of each mosquito, and the identify the major structures or the students will be asked to perform the same tasks from samples provided for by the teacher. 2.) The students will be asked to either perform a lab experiment that allows the students to observe the different stages of the mosquito life cycle or view a video/multi-media program that outlines the different stages of the mosquito life cycle. The class will then discuss what they have recorded/learned.
Lesson Plan #2 (continued) Closure: 1.) The final activity for this lesson will consist of the students being asked to prepare a brief report about the different(major) types of mosquitoes, their major structures and their functions, the different stages of the life cycle, and what takes place during each stage. The students can utilize any resource at their disposal (internet, books, magazines, journals, multi-media programs, etc. to do the research for the paper); the report needs to include information gathered from their collections and experiments. The paper needs to be clearly written, the information needs to be accurate, and the points listed above need to be covered.
Lesson Plan #2 (continued) Materials/Resources: 1. Science magazines and journals 2. Science CD-ROM’s 3.. Internet software 4. Mosquito specimens (if needed) 5. Microscopes (for viewing structures)
Lesson Plan #3 • Lesson #3 Subject: Science Grade Level: 8th Grade Theme: Mosquitoes and methods of control (consequences of: environmental, etc.). QCC’s: 1. Use process skills of observing, classifying, communicating, measuring, predicting, inferring, identifying, and manipulating variables. Also use skills of recording, analyzing and operationally defining, formulating models, experimenting, constructing hypotheses and drawing conclusions.
