DSpace for E-Theses Introducing the results of the Theses Alive! Project at Edinburgh University Library, in the form of the Tapir (Theses Alive Plugin for Institutional Repositories) and the Edinburgh Research Archive (ERA); wherein examples of implementation are presented and features discussed in the context of using DSpace for E-Theses.
… at Edinburgh • Adapt and develop an open-source package for use across the UK • Produce an OAI-compliant E-Thesis repository • Develop a pilot national service with the aim of supporting E-Theses creation and management for UK universities • Produce an institutional guide to adopting and managing E-Theses. • Collect 500 E-Theses in the UK segment of the NDLTD
… for E-Theses • Default Submission Procedures • Flexibility with metadata and storage methods; lacks some of the fields that will be required for E-Theses, and the flexibility to change this easily. • Archiving and Access • Geared towards Digital Preservation; supports OAI-PMH v2.0 and has good restriction features • Administration and Security • Configurable with superior methodology, although some shortcomings exist: workflow is rigid; no supervisory facilities; policies are too complex to administer quickly and easily.
The Tapir • Theses Alive Plugin for Institutional Repositories • Provides the extra features to DSpace needed for UK E-Theses support • Open-Source product • Current version 0.3; forthcoming 0.4 http://sourceforge.net/projects/tapir-eul
The Tapir’s Features • Supervised Workspace • Communication between supervisor(s)/advisor(s) and student (edit metadata/add files/comment) • Supervision Administrative Tools • Add/Remove/Modify “Supervision Orders” • Thesis Metadata Capture • UK Recommended metadata set; multiple submission procedures • Interface Upgrades • Display relevant metadata; ensure item type is clear
This New ERA • Edinburgh Research Archive • 185 E-Theses currently • DSpace 1.1.1 & Tapir 0.3

What about the Future? • Integration of E-Theses & E-Prints, conceptually and actually • Central search services/local harvesters • Mandatory E-Thesis submission in institutions • DSpace submission and workflow improvements • Surface of information in different systems (institutional portals) • + much much more …
