Coercive Acts(Intolerable Acts) By Benjamin Wessel Ryan Johnston
What Are the Intolerable Acts? • Series of Laws • Passed by the Britain Parliament in 1774 • Sparked Outrage between Colonies and Great Britain • An Important development in the growth of American Revolution
Why Were the Acts Created? • Direct Response to the Boston Tea Party • Great Britain deep in debt • Decided to tax colonies, but backfired
Boston Port Act • Forced the closure of Boston Harbor • Until debts were paid from The East India Company
Massachusetts Government Act • All Positions in the Colonial government to be appoint by the governor or King
Administration Of Justice Act • Allowed governor to move trials of the accused royal officials to another colony or Great Britain • Considered the “Murder Act”
Quartering Act • Authorized military commanders to house soldiers in private homes • Also in taverns and vacant buildings
Effects on Colonists • Considered violation of their constitutional rights, natural rights and colonial charter • Acts considered “destroying the liberty of America”
Effects on Great Britain • Hoped the Acts would isolate radicals in Massachusetts • Cause American colonist to concede the authority of Parliament over the elected assemblies • Planned backfired because harshness of some of the acts made it difficult for moderates in colonies to speak in favor of Parliament
