  2. Proclamation of 1763 • No settlement west of Appalachians • Why? British—avoid war with Indians • Keep land for British speculators • Colonist Reaction: • Colonial *speculators lost investments • Limiting their freedom to move *Someone who tries to determine the future of markets and make money

  3. Sugar Act of 1764 • Enforced tax on non-British sugar and molasses • Would cut down on colonists’ profits • Colonial response: • Smuggled foreign sugar and molasses

  4. Stamp Act 1765 • Tax on all printed items • Pay for war with France • Colonists Reaction • Colonists boycotted stamps and trade • “No taxation w/o representation” • Repealed in 1766

  5. Townshend Acts of 1767 • Tax on glass, paper, paint, lead, and tea • Colonists’ Reaction: • Boycotted the goods • All except tea tax were repealed

  6. Quartering Acts • Colonists had to house British troops in their homes • To pay for cost of British army • Colonist Reaction • More unhappiness about being under royal rule

  7. Writs of Assistance • Law officers could search homes, buildings, or ships for smuggled goods • Why? Basically, an unlimited search warrant • Colonist Reaction • Challenged at every level of superior courts for 5 years and ignored • Anger and fear for colonists

  8. Boston Port Act of 1774 • In response to Boston Tea Party • Boston Harbor closed • Colonist Reaction • Deprived colonists of needed goods
