This presentation will probably involve audience discussion, which will create action items. Use PowerPoint to keep track of these action items during your presentation • In Slide Show, click on the right mouse button • Select “Meeting Minder” • Select the “Action Items” tab • Type in action items as they come up • Click OK to dismiss this box • This will automatically create an Action Item slide at the end of your presentation with your points entered. Video as a Lens into the Social Interactions and Collaborations within KITL KMD1002 Presenters: Dan Kurtz, Cheryl Ann Madeira, Mike Tissenbaum, Joan Touzet
Summary • Technology has become a common tool within a wide-range of both personal and professional environments. • Impact on people (communication, social interaction, exchange) • New technologies can also cause new and unique barriers.
Knowledge Innovation & Technology Lab (KITL) • Located at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE/UT), • Purpose of room is to study educational research and collaboration • The communication tools of interest for our project are: • Web-based collaboration tool • Thunder System.
Objective and Goals • To develop an understanding about practical human interactive issues such as time management and organization. • To determine how users establish the rules of engagement within the KITL room. • To observe learning researchers' uses of the Thunder System for collaboration and discussion.
Hypothesis • H1: Effective time management and organization leads to successful interactions and collaborations. • H2: Users benefit from social rules of engagement that can lead to successful collaborative outcomes. • H3: Users would more effectively collaborate and develop community through the use of the Thunder System.
Methodology Sample: • 12 participants • Members of group consisted of research educators, architects, administrators, and technology designers (interdisciplinary) • Single two-hour meeting in the KITL room observed – this was the first time these individuals had used the room as a group. • Objective of members of group: To create a lesson/activity using the Thunder System (collaborative technology.
Methodology Data Collection: • field notes, • video documentation from two angles • surveys
Field Notes http://www.pbwiki.com Field Notes
Methodology • Experience Video Editing • Capturing data within video documentation • Time element of project and organization of clip • Mechanism of Understanding from video versus interviews, field notes and surveys (and final product)
Data Analysis and Findings • Effective time management and organization leads to successful interactions and collaborations. • Social interactions must be encouraged throughout the meeting. • Direction and layout organization (spatial orientation) important to increase social interaction • Smaller group increases social interactions
Data Analysis and Findings • Users benefit from social rules of engagement that can lead to successful collaborative outcomes . • When rules and organization not in place (more informal meeting) social group will develop their own organization and rules. • The development of social rules of engagement enables the members of group to function better and to complete tasks.
Data and Findings • Users would more effectively collaborate and develop community through the use of the Thunder System. • The members of the community collaborate when using the Thunder System – however this needs to be in a small group context. • The community is established by the problem-solving of the technology (mutual goals).
Implications of Study • Organization and structure within a technology-enhanced meeting, establishing rules of engagement necessary within technology based social interaction. • Technical issues that need to be solved • Limitations of KITL Thunder System – although collaborative – only one person at a time can input information (can prevent simultaneous free thinking.)
Video as Lens • Video documentation lends a powerful, rich data source for understanding social interactions within technology environment • Able to follow each idea and thought without missing other members contributions • Increases time element in analysis • Better if there is movement or action within the social interaction
Goals for Next Review • Follow up for KITL room: • Guidelines for the room; technology information steps. • Members of group come with some project outline template • Interaction within this highly technology based room requires the entire time devoted to “PLAYING” with the technology.
