  1. Abrasion • An injury that occurs when several layers of skin are torn loose

  2. Assessment • Collection of objective and subjective data on a patient’s health status

  3. Atrophy • Weakness and wasting away of muscle tissue

  4. Avulsion • Injury in which a tissue is torn and only partially attached

  5. belly • Central part of the muscle

  6. bilateral • On both sides

  7. bursitis • Inflammation of the bursa (a padded cavity around a joint that decreases the friction between two surfaces)

  8. circuit training • The use of 6-10 strength exercises completed one right after another; each exercise is done by performing a specific number of repetitions or for a specific period of time

  9. Contusion • An injury resulting from a direct blow or force that does not interrupt the skin; typically bruising is seen at the injury site

  10. Concussion • A more serious form of closed head injury characterized by one or more of the following: LOC, amnesia, seizure, or a change in mental state **

  11. contrecoup • MOI in which the brain rebounds off the other side of the skull after an initial impact

  12. crepitus • Grinding noise or sensation in a joint

  13. cyrotherapy • Therapeutic use of cooling agents

  14. diagnosis • Using information from assessment and evaluation findings to establish the cause and nature of an injury or disease; made only by a physician or other health care provider

  15. dislocation • Displacement of any bone from its normal position

  16. dorsiflexion • Movement that flexes the foot

  17. doping • Unnatural use of any substance or means to gain an unfair advantage over the competition

  18. Dynamic exercise • Activity that causes the muscle to contract and shorten

  19. ecchymosis • bruising

  20. Edema • swelling • Effusion • Swelling in the joint cavity • Ephedra • Substance derived from a shrub like plant; used as a stimulant to boost energy and weight loss • Epilepsy • Condition in which seizures occur regularly • Epitaxis • nosebleed • Eversion • Movement of the sole of the foot outward • 09 04 18 • Extension • Increase the angle between two joints • Flexion • Decrease the angle between two joints

  22. 10/01/19 Terminology Tuesday • Inflammation- process that occurs when tissues are subjected to trauma; pain, heat, redness, and swelling occur • Inversion- movement of the sole of the foot inward • Jaundice- buildup of bilirubin and bile in the bloodstream, which tints the skin and eyes a yellowish color • Kinesiology- study of physical activity or movement • Laceration- an injury that results from a tear in the skin, also known as a cut • Myositis ossificans- a calcification that forms within the muscle, results from an improperly managed contusion • Neuropraxia- cessation of function of a nerve without degenerative changes • Opposition- movement of the thumb to touch each finger • Ossification- process of bone formation • Osteoarthritis- degenerative joint disease • Osteoporosis- bone loss
