  2. Infectious diseases in Ukraine Despite some improvement of the epidemiological situation in Ukraine, infectious diseases still remain the major public health problem. So that’s why the level of diseases in Ukraine is higher than in the leading countries of Europe. The mortality level, caused by infectious pathology is high as well.

  3. Morbidity and Mortality caused by Infectious diseases in Ukraine in the period - 1995-2009

  4. Laboratories: Intestinal Infections and Parasites Laboratory Respiratory and Virus Infections Laboratory Disinfection Laboratory Hepatitis and HIV Laboratory HIV Associated Infections Laboratory Medical Microbiology Laboratory Immunology and Immunization Laboratory Experimental Chemotherapy for Virus Infections Laboratory HIV and Hepatitis Prevention Laboratory Neurological Infections Laboratory Intensive Care and Toxicological Laboratory STRUCTURE OF INSTITUTE Our Institute consists of 12 science departments with 110 beds-clinic base.

  5. STRUCTURE OF INSTITUTE Clinic CLINIC OF THE INSTITUTE • Hepatitis Clinic • Neurological Infections Clinic • AIDS Clinic with the Intensive Care unit • Intensive Care Department • Outpatient Care Department • Laboratory

  6. HUMAN RESOURCES Professors - 9 Doctors of Medical Sciences – 20 Candidates of Medical Sciences- 37 Researchers - 93

  7. MAIN ACTIVITIES HIV PREVENTION • The Institute is the principal national centre for scientific support to the State programmes for HIV prevention and treatment in Ukraine. • The Institute’s research activities are aimed at the epidemiological peculiarities of HIV spreading in Ukraine (the most affected country in Europe). • A system of preventive measures against transfer of HIV from mothers to new born children; • A strategy for laboratory testing of HIV infection has been developed. • A system of monitoring HIV resistance to antivirus drugs is being developed.

  8. MAIN ACTIVITIES AIDS TREATMENT • The Institute is the first and still the only clinical department in Ukraine where about 1200 HIV patients are treated annually. • The development of a standard for HIV diagnostics and treatment based on clinical research data.

  9. MAIN ACTIVITIES HEPATITIS PREVENTION • Monitoring and research of hepatitis infections in Ukraine, including sub-clinical forms, virus positive cases etc. • Scientific support to the national system of monitoring Hepatitis infection in Ukraine. • Development of treatment methods for different forms of hepatitis (B,C,D,TTV)

  10. MAIN ACTIVITIES NEUROLOGICAL INFECTIONS • Research and development of methods for the treatment of neurological pathologies caused by infections

  11. MAIN ACTIVITIES INFLUENZA VIRUS PREVENTATION • Respiratory and Virus Infections Laboratory is included into the WHO Global Flu Prevention System. The Institute is involved in: • the monitoring of circulation of influenza viruses • the development of the flu surveillance methods in Ukraine • the development of the methods for the flu virus isolation in cells for the national laboratories. • the development of forecasts for influenza epidemics in Ukraine.

  12. MAIN ACTIVITIES IMMUNIZATION SUPPORT • The development of immunization strategies for diphtheria, measles, mumps, rubella, poliomyelitis, Hib- infection, hepatitis and other infections. • Scientific support to the development of the National Immunization Calendar. • Research of immunogenicity and reactogenicity for different vaccines. More than 10 clinical programs for different vaccines have been implemented by the Institute.

  13. Other Activities • A museum of microorganism strains is organized at the Institute, which also serves as a fund of samples to support research and diagnostic activities performed by the national laboratories. • Research in the long term dynamics of in-clinic infections and their antibiotic resistance. • Coordination of inter-clinical research in the antibiotic resistance, antivirus drugs and disinfection materials. • Research in capacity of microorganisms to produce biofilms (biological, chemical and physical factors). • Development of new antivirus drugs based on molecular mimicry of virus peptides and bacteria in order to lower the cost of treatment.

  14. Partnership with International Organizations • European Bureau of World Health Organization in Ukraine • International Alliance of HIV/AIDS Prevention • HIV Centre of the Frankfurt University • William Joan Clinton’s Fund in Ukraine
