  6. Why do we ask questions in class? • To check and assess understanding • To review learning • To re-focus our teaching • To stretch and challenge • To deepen understanding • To encourage active participation • To stimulate discussion and ideas • To promote thinking and reflection • To arouse curiosity • To share learning

  7. Outstanding questioning… • Demonstrates an understanding of the way students think • Identifies and corrects misconceptions • Checks understanding and offers support • Promotes curiosity and resilience • Deepens knowledge and understanding • Demands progressively more of students • Reflects and values the diversity of students’ experiences

  8. Our students like… • Thinking time • Whole class questions and debates (‘You hear other people’s ideas and you’re not afraid to give your own’) • Questions that make you think • The right balance and number of questions • The right level of challenge • Multiple choice questions, which are less stressful • Discussing answers with friends/peers • Being prepared to give the right answer • Having a chance to volunteer an answer • Teachers knowing who will be able to answer • Humour and fairness

  9. Our students don’t like… • Trick questions • Rhetorical questions • Feeling ‘picked on’ • Having their hands up for a really long time but feeling overlooked • Feeling embarrassed for giving the wrong answer • Students shouting out answers when they have their hands up • Teachers selecting the same students repeatedly • Questions that are either too easy or too hard
