Today’s session... • Review last week’s test << Discussion >> • Task 3 (Preparation for UWE workplace investigation project) << Activity >> • Planning Matrix << Activity >> • Preparation for the guest lecture << Discussion >> • Task 4 (Prepare questions on UWE IT) << Activity >>
Review last week’s test • How did it go? • What sort of questions were asked? • What questions were the most challenging? • Did you prepare sufficiently? • Any notes for the tutor’s to improve it for next year’s students?
Task 3 (Preparation for UWE workplace investigation project) • Review the entire repertoire of situational variables (things to be found out in an IS investigation) and investigation techniques (ways to find them out) pooled by the whole cohort via the module Discussion Board forum dedicated to the PPT outputs from W3 T3 • Draw up a shortlist of techniques that you would personally prioritise, and feel confident using "in real life", in your future investigation in co-operation with other students
Task 3 (Preparation for UWE workplace investigation project) (2) • Analyse each technique in your shortlist and annotate it in the following two ways:- • Is it a primary or secondary technique (remember primary research means finding something out in person; secondary research means finding something out from published sources)? Label it P or S respectively; • Which level of our 3-level hierarchy is it focused on eliciting, organisational, informational or technical variables? Annotate your list O, I or T respectively;
Planning Matrix • What sort of things do you need to find out? • You can’t complete a project for the host without knowing... what? • What will be different between UWE-wide systems and host-specific systems?
Preparation for the guest lecture • Steve Grive (head of IT services) • Lee Norris (principal project manager) “Gather data about UWE’s Information Systems” “Gather data about UWE’s ICT Infrastructure”
Preparation for the guest lecture (2) • Take notes • Facts & figures • Brand names / staff names / software names • Ask questions This is a great source of primary research for your assignment – don’t waste it!
Preparation for the guest lecture (3) Students Applications (software) Complexities of running the system Differences between staff & student networks Servicing & support Virtualisation What questions could you ask? Cloud computing Ownership of systems
Any questions? ???
