“Backwards Design” Creating Significant Learning Experiences: An Integrated Approach to Designing College Courses L. Dee Fink
STLCC – Wildwood Campus • STLCC is a four-campus institution. • Our Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) are created and agreed on district-wide. Wildwood campus
STLCC – Wildwood Campus We wanted to create a final exam that would assess the SLOs for our course.
STLCC – Wildwood Campus We started with each SLO and created exam items that assessed the SLO.
STLCC – Wildwood Campus Rather than create a “practice test”, we created a “Final Exam Review”.
STLCC – Wildwood Campus Each SLO was listed, followed by several example questions.
STLCC – Wildwood Campus The majority of the exam is multiple choice and graded on a ScanTron machine. An Item Analysis is done to see which questions are being missed the most often.
