1-2 Stemplots & Dot Plots. Stemplots. To make a stemplot: (stem and leaf) Separate each piece of data into a stem and a leaf. (Each leaf should only be one digit.) List the stems vertically Draw a vertical line to the right of the stems List the leaves in order to the right.

Stemplots Purpose/Use of Stemplots: • Used for SMALL data sets • Used if you want to SEE the raw data • Ultimately used to show distribution of data

Dot Plots To make a Dot Plot: (Line Plot) • Draw a number line that contains all values in your data list • Place a dot above each number each time it appears in the data list. • Number of dots must equal number of items in the data list.

Dot Plots Purpose/Use for Dot Plots: • Used for SMALL data sets • Used to show raw data • Ultimately used to show the frequency of data
Stem plot shows the distribution of data using actual numerical values • Dot plot show the distribution of data by showing its frequency • The advantages of using stem and dot plots include easy viewing of max and min. Also, the clusters of data or gaps in data are easily seen.
