What is Word Processing? • Word processing is the use of computer software to enter and edit text. • When using word processing software such as Word, you can create and edit documents such as letters and reports. • These documents can be used in your school, career, personal, and business activities.

Text Entry and Word Wrap • To enter text in a document, you simply begin keying at the insertion point. • If the text you are keying extends beyond the right margin, it automatically moves to the next line. (This feature is called word wrap) • Word wrap is when the words are “wrapped around the next line when they do not fit on the current line.”
When you save a file for the first time, open the File menu and choose Save As or click the Save button on the toolbar. Saving a Document
Creating Folders • Folders can help you organize your disks. • To create a new folder within you current folder, click the Create New Folder button in the Save As dialog box.

Print Preview command enables you to look at a document as it will appear when printed. Previewing Your Document
Portrait Orientation is longer than wide. This is the default for Word. Selecting a Page Orientation • Landscape Orientation is wider than long .
Documents can be printed in their entirety or as single pages at any time. The Print dialog box can be found by clicking the File menu and choosing Print or by clicking the Print button on the Standard toolbar. You can also click the Print button on the Print Preview toolbar but this causes the pages to immediately begin printing using the default settings. Printing your Document
Objectives • Show/Hide formatting characters • Delete and type over text • Undo and redo recent actions • Cut, copy, and paste text • Find and Replace text • Use the Go To command • Review word, paragraph and character counts.
Selecting Text • Selecting is highlighting a block of text. • Blocks can be as small as one character or as large as the entire document. • To select text with the mouse, position the I-beam to the left of the first character of the text you want to select.
Viewing Hidden Characters • Many times its much easier to select and edit sentences and paragraphs if you can see the hidden markers. • The Show/Hide command allows you to see these hidden formatting markers.
Using the Backspace & Delete Keys • There are two ways to delete characters: • Using the Backspace key • Using the Delete key • Striking Backspace deletes the character to the left of the insertion point. • Striking Delete removes the character to the right of the insertion point.
In Overtype mode, the text you key replaces, or types over existing text. You can turn Overtype on and off by double-clicking OVR on the status bar or by striking Insert on you keyboard. Using Overtype

The Clipboard is a temporary storage place in the computer’s memory. You sent text to the Clipboard by using either Cut or Copy commands. Use the Cut and Paste command to move text from one location to another. The Cut command removes the selected text from the document and places on the clipboard. When you Paste the text, it is copied from the Clipboard to the location of the insertion point in the document. The Copy command is similar to the Cut command. However when you choose the Copy command, a copy of the selected text is placed on the Clipboard while the original text remains in the document. Moving and Copying Text Cut Paste Copy
Using Find & Replace • Find and Replace are useful editing commands that let you find specific words in a document quickly and replace them with new words. • Both commands are chosen from the Edit menu.
Using the Find Command, you can quickly search a document for every occurrence of a specific word or phrase you key in the Find what box. Find Command
The Replace command allows you to replace a word or phrase in the Find what box with another word or phrase you key in the Replace with box. Replace Command
One of the quickest ways to move through a long document is to use the Go To command. Go To allows you to skip to a specific part of a document. In the Go to what: box, you can select where you want to move in the document. Using the Go To Command
