Poems are organized in stanzas and lines. Lines= Sentences Line-break= Space in between ---------- Stanzas= Paragraphs
Only reading line by line. Not stepping back to look at stanzas or overall organization of a poem.
How is the first stanza organized? • Stanza 1 • First and last lines match • Talks about the voice of thunder • Talks about where the voice is (ABOVE) and how it sounds • Says it beautifies the land
How is the second stanza organized? • Stanza 2 • First and last lines match • Talks about the voice of grasshopper • Talks about where the voice is (BELOW) and how it sounds • Says it beautifies the land
What was the same and different about both stanzas? • Stanza 1 • First and last lines match • Talks about the voice of thunder • Talks about where the voice is (ABOVE) and how it sounds • Says it beautifies the land • Stanza 2 • First and last lines match • Talks about the voice of grasshopper • Talks about where the voice is (BELOW) and how it sounds • Says it beautifies the land
These two stanzas are twins! With only a slight difference in topic, we see the author organized them the same way. WHO WHERE WHO WHERE
1 • Read the first stanza. 2 • Read the second stanza. 3 Jot down differences and similarities between the stanzas.

What is the “shape” or organization of this poem? How are the first and second stanzas alike and different?
1) Find another poem to read. Count how many stanzas there are and notice the way the stanzas are organized. • 2) Create a Venn Diagram comparing the similarities and differences you see between stanzas.
Write an explanation of why you think the author made the stanzas in “Twelfth Song of Thunder” almost identical. • What could the author be trying to highlight? How does the shape of the poem affect it’s meaning?
