Kurdish/Turkish Conflict • Southeastern Turkey • Kurds vs. Turks • Kurds demanded separation from Turkey; autonomy for Kurdistan; arms of former Iraqi soldiers fighting against the United States fell into the hands of Kurds. Over 100,000 casualties since 1984.
Lord’s Resistance Army Insurgency • South Sudan, Dem. Republic of the Congo • Joseph Kony, spokesperson of God vs. Ugandan government • Kony attempts to overthrow Ugandan gov’t and establish a theocratic state based on the 10 Commandments • LRA accused of human rights violations including mutilation, torture, slavery, rape, abduction of 20,000 children-became child soldiers
Insurgency in Kashmir • India, Pakistan (Kashmir-Muslim territory in India) • Began officially in 1987 opposing elections of Indian government and rule of Kashmir; tried to assassinate Pakistani President, Musharaaf in 2004; fighting for political rights and opposing legitimacy of Indian rule in Kashmir; 68,000 casualties
“Arab Spring” • A revolutionary wave of demonstrations and protests occurring in the Arab world. The demonstrations include strikes against oppression and the restriction of free speech through the use of social media. Causes-dictatorships, human rights violations and government corruption.
