Seminar series: Tourism spaces and consumption practices • Paola Minoia (Helsinki) & Chiara Rabbiosi (visiting, Bologna University) • Time: 4 meetings in March 2014: Mondays 10-17-24 and Friday 28, at 10-12 • Content • connections between political economy approaches in urban studies and consumer culture theories • how consumption frames the relationship between territorial governance and the construction of subjectivities. • how flows of economy and culture jointly influence spatial dynamics • roles played by the nexus consumption-tourism. • Selected concepts and themes are: • production / consumption / co-production • - space / place ; territorialisation / deterritorialisation • - mise en tourisme / touristification • city/place-marketing • the “dual genre” of urban tourism policies (neo-liberal vs. socially innovative) • The focus of working groups will be on shopping as a theme for urban tourism. • Methods and Evaluation • 4 meetings (2hrs), articles reading and final essay based on empirical analysis of selected phenomena related with the seminars discussions. The essay must be handed within two weeks after the last meeting.
