  2. Foot-washing? • “Foot washing in the NT culture was performed on occasions such as ‘(1) cultic settings, (2) domestic settings for personal hygiene and comfort, and (3) domestic settings devoted to hospitality’” (Coloe, CBQ 66/3 [2004] 407).

  3. The Nature of Full-Extent Love • “I, your Lord and Teacher, have just washed your feet. You, then, should washone another’s feet” (John 13.14), • “As I have loved you, so you must loveone another” (John 13.34b). • “the full extent of his love” (John 13.1c)  foot-washing

  4. Jesus, the Master, as Servant to all • “[Jesus] being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death—even death on a cross!” (Php 2.6-8).

  5. Jesus, knowing all, loves unconditionally • “Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father” (13.1b); • “Jesus knew that the Father had given him complete power; he knew that he had come from God and was going to God” (13.3). •  Jesus washes the feet of Judas (and Peter)

  6. The Wash-Basin (Exodus 30.17-21) • Then the LORD said to Moses, ‘Make a bronze basin, with its bronze stand, for washing. Place it between the Tent of Meeting and the altar, and put water in it. Aaron and his sons are to wash their hands and feet with water from it. Whenever they enter the Tent of Meeting, they shall wash with water so that they will not die. Also, when they approach the altar to minister by presenting an offering made to the LORD by fire, they shall wash their hands and feet so that they will not die. This is to be a lasting ordinance for Aaron and his descendants for the generations to come.’

  7. Jesus, the Great High Priest, as Sacrifice • The Wash-Basin (Exodus 30.17-21) • “Blessed and holy are those who have part in the first resurrection. The second death has no power over them, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with him” (Rev 20.6).

  8. The Sacrament of Communion • he who eats this bread will live forever. (John 6.58) • he who eats my bread has lifted up his heel against me. (John 13.18)
