  1. Smarter Driving Andy Barnes

  2. The Problems We Face • 26 million cars in the UK • Road transport accounts for around a quarter of CO2 emissions

  3. New Cars are fuel efficient but expensive 98g/km CO2 £13,195

  4. People are going to drive……so what can we do?

  5. Drive more efficiently

  6. Top Tips! • Over revving your engine wastes fuel. • Change gear at around 2000-2500rpm for optimum efficiency Don't over rev your engine.

  7. Driving at 45-50mph in 5th gear is the most fuel efficient speed to drive at. At speeds over 70mph vehicles use vast amounts of fuel. Drive at the appropriate speed.

  8. Step off the accelerator. & Read the road ahead.

  9. Unnecessary weight means the engine has to work harder so take those golf clubs out! Roof racks create air resistance and increase fuel consumption Remove any unnecessary weight from the car Remove roofracks to improve aerodynamics

  10. Avoid using the air conditioning unless necessary • Open the windows or use an eco setting if it’s really needed, however… • If travelling at high speeds having your windows open will create extra drag.

  11. Ensure the vehicle is regularly maintained. • Check tyre pressure every week and before long journeys. • Ensure the vehicle is fully serviced regularly. • Poorly maintained vehicles can mean the engine has to work harder and use more fuel.

  12. Benefits of Smarter Driving • Reduced fuel costs£200 per year based on an average mileage • Reduced emissions • Fewer accidents • Less wear and tear on the car

  13. Or where possible, drive less.

  14. Car Sharing • Free for anyone to use. • Helps to dramatically reduce fuel bills and carbon emissions. • Businesses and organisations can set up their own private group.

  15. Other options... • Flexible working – could you work from home? • Co-ordinate journeys and activities. • Utilise local facilities rather than travelling further afield. • Plan journeys – use of maps, route planners or even sat navs.

  16. What can the Energy Saving Trust offer you?

  17. Smarter Driving Lessons • Implements smarter driving tips through one-to-one tuition. • £25 per person • Average fuel savings of 10-15% from one 50 minute lesson.

  18. Free green fleet review Regular e-bullitens on fuel efficient vehicles and eco-driving. Eco-driving simulator Presentations and drop in sessions Employee Engagement Events Other options

  19. Thanks for listening
