What is Study Driven? Teaching a genre or author’s style by a close examination of that type of writing and then trying it.
Research According to Ray, “We love study because it allows us to ask very good questions about writing, that never feel finished, such as, “How do people write poetry really, really well? Where do they get their ideas? What’s their process like from ideas to finished poems?” Studies that begin with questions like this lead to answers.
Study Driven Study Driven is a book about study as a driving force in the teaching of writing. When students study a genre of writing they move from grounded understandings to informed practice.
Based on The book Study Driven by Katy Wood Ray.
Gathering Texts The teacher, sometimes along with the students, gathers examples of the kind of writing students will do.
We are focusing on the genre of poetry. We have gathered selections of poetry from elementary school through adulthood. The first step of this process is complete when you have gathered your texts appropriate for your audience.
Setting the Stage The next step is to set the stage. Teachers make sure students know they will be required to finish a piece of more of this type of writing which will show an influence of the study. Each day students will read whatever genre you are focusing on: since we are studying poetry, each day we will read poems, make notices of what poems are. This will show that we are trying to write something like what we are reading.
Immersion The teacher and the students spend time reading and getting to know the texts they’ll study. They make notes of things they notice about how the texts are written.
Close Study We make notices of what we are studying around the question, “What do we notice about how these texts were written?” Teacher and students work together to use specific language to say what they now know about the writing from this study. They record it and the teacher takes the lead in helping students think about possibilities in their writings.
Writing Under the Influence Students work on writing something to show the influence of the study in writing. Since we are working on poetry, each day we would read different types of poetry, add to our notices and then write poetry. Teacher conferencing would ensue, guiding and encouraging the writer . As a class (or the teacher only) we decide how many pieces of writing we will use as a grade.
