Government DFE advice • ensure pupils “study the core academic subjects at GCSE, the subjects that keep your options open, and allow you to enter the widest ranges of careers and university courses.” The Secretary of State set out the Government’s view that a compulsory EBacc would enhance the chances of disadvantaged pupils….. For the EBacc to become the “default option” for all pupils, • “achieving the government’s goal for 90% of pupils to be studying the vital Ebacc subjects of maths, English, science, a foreign language and either history or geography” • with schools to determine the “small minority of pupils for whom taking the whole EBacc is not appropriate.”

A thought about option choices – keeping A Level doors open • Many universities favour “Facilitating” A levels. • Express choice of Russell Group Universities (top 24 in the UK) • These are the subjects you can’t do at A level without having done the GCSE first • A natural science (Biology, Chemistry and Physics) • A modern or ancient language • English Literature (not Language) • History • Geography • Maths and Further Maths
The Form • The configuration of subjects in blocks comes from the survey, so it should fit the vast majority of combinations. Students do however change their minds ……
What if you can’t do the combination you want… • Changes are possible if enough students have the same issue. Fill in the problems box on the choice form • Please indicate any problems in the box below
Caution:-Difficult Factors • Low Numbers • Inappropriate Choices • Sometimes only one class possible • Reserve choice is a helpful process, try and select one further subject
