Int 2 Notes The Digestive System We’ve done mouth to stomach Now: small intestine to anus
Function of the small intestine • The small intestine absorbs the end products of digestion (glucose, fatty acids and amino acids) through its wall and passes them to the blood. Features of the small intestine • It is very long • Its internal surface is folded • Has lots of tiny finger-like projections (villi) • These help to create a l______ s______ a______ Stick in your diagrams
Role of Villi • To absorb and transport the end products of digestion AND create a large surface area. • There are several features that help it do this. Features of Villi • The lining is only 1 cell thick (very very thin) • contains a dense network of blood capillaries
Features of Villi Inside each villi (finger-like projection) there are 2 transport systems: The first is a blood capillary (very thin vessel). Glucose and amino acids pass into here and are taken to the liver by the hepatic portal vein. The second is the lacteal (lymphatic vessel). End products of fat digestion (fatty acids and glycerol) pass into here. Colour your diagrams
We ABSORB the useful WATER! Then get rid of the waste! Now that we have absorbed all the useful food substances… what happens now?
Last stage of Digestion • Undigested foods (fibre), bacteria and dead cells pass into the Large Intestine. • The large intestine absorbs water from this waste. What is left over is now called faeces. • The faeces are stored in the rectumuntil they are passed out through the anus.
