  1. Bus Safety!

  2. Walking to the Bus Stop • Be alert to traffic. • Check both ways for cars before crossing the street. • Always walk in front of the bus – never behind. • While waiting for the bus, stay in a safe place away from the street. • Before leaving the sidewalk or driveway look for the red flashing lights on the bus.

  3. Walking to the Bus Stop Never go near or under the bus to retrieve something you’ve dropped Go to the bus stop 5 minutes before your scheduled pickup time. While at the bus stop, wait quietly in a safe place away from the road. Do not run and play while waiting.

  4. Getting On and Off the Bus • Enter the bus in a line with younger students in the front. Hold the handrail while going up and down the stairs. • When entering the bus, go directly to your seat. Remain seated and face forward during the entire ride.

  5. Tips for Riding on the Bus • Remain seated at all times. Standing and walking around are prohibited. • Always talk quietly to the person in a seat beside you. No yelling or screaming. • Never throw things out of windows. Keep aisles clear at all times. Keep your feet on the floor directly in front of you and book bags should be kept in your lap.

  6. Tips for Riding on the Bus Do not block walking aisle or emergency exits Always be silent when the bus comes to a railroad crossing If an emergency occurs, listen to the driver and follow all instructions Keep your hands to yourself at all times

  7. Exiting the Bus • If you leave something on the bus, never return to the bus to get it. The driver may not see you comeback and he/she may begin moving the bus • Respect the “Danger Zone” which surrounds the bus. The “Danger Zone” is ten feet wide on all sides of the bus. Always remain 10 steps away from the bus where the driver can see you.

  8. Exiting the Bus Always cross in front of the bus. Never go behind the bus. Never speak to strangers at the bus stop.
