The Jungle Causes an Uproar • Sinclair wrote The Jungle in order to bring attention to the plight of workers in Chicago’s meat packing industry; • He once stated, “I aimed at the public’s heart, and by accident I hit it in the stomach.” • Sinclair was invited to the White House by TR to give his opinion on how to make inspections safer.
Roosevelt Takes Action • Meat Inspection Act (1906) – Dictates strict cleanliness requirements for meat packers and created a program for federal meat inspection • Pure Food and Drug Act (1906) – Halted the sale of contaminated foods and required truth in labeling.
