  3. Writing of TKAM • In 1957, she finished the 1st draft of TKM (it was extended from a short story to a novel) • Spent two years with her publisher revising it • Was finally published in 1960 • Immediate success/won the Pulitzer Prize for Literature

  4. Setting • Set in a small town in rural Alabama in the early 1930s • Set during the Great Depression • Racism existed and segregation strongly enforced

  5. Mockingbirds • Beautiful and peaceful birds that sing or mimic certain sounds • Therefore, it would be a sin to kill a mockingbird • They symbolize true goodness and innocence • Will be a symbol for a few characters in the text
