Blood What is it and what does it do?
Plasma • 55% of the blood • 90-95% water • Contains: • Food (Amino Acids, Simple Sugars, Fatty Acids/Glycerol.) • Minerals (sodium, calcium, potassium, etc.) • Vitamins • Hormones • Wastes (Urea, CO2)
Blood Cells • 45% of the total blood • The living portion of blood • ErythrocytesRed Blood Cells (RBC) • Leukocytes White Blood Cells (WBC) • Thrombocytes Platelets
ErythrocytesRed Blood Cells (RBC’s) • 5,000,000 RBC’s per drop of blood • Carry oxygen through the blood • Oxygen attaches to hemoglobin • Iron is needed to make hemoglobin
LeukocytesWhite Blood Cells (WBC’s) • 5000-8000 per drop of blood • Fight infections and cancers • Amount per drop of blood will increase with infection
White Blood CellsNeutrophil • Engulf and destroy bacteria
White Blood CellsEosinophil • Engulf and destroy foreign cells (pollen, animal dander, etc.) • Release chemicals that kill parasites
White Blood CellsBasophils • Release histamine at the site of tissue injury • Release heparin to limit the size of forming blood clot
White Blood CellsLymphocytes • Engulf and destroy viruses • Produce antibodies
White Blood CellsMonocytes • Engulf and destroy micro-organisms, cancerous cells, dead leukocytes, and cellular debris
ThrombocytesPlatelets • Initiate blood clotting • 12 clotting factors Roman numeral numbered I through XIII (no number VI)
