Marine Renewable Energy PROTTEC Collaboration Retreat Marine Renewable Energy PROJECT PROPOSALS Nursery Site Development Jim Grant 19/04/11
Project Brief Activities Outcomes to date Conclusions
IDEA • Develop new Wave and Tidal proving grounds offshore to support: • Instrument measurement techniques • Deployment and operational maintenance regimes for WECS/TECS • Critical mass in terms of test sites • Enabling medium-long term testing
2. OBJECTIVES • Define geographical/operational parameters for test sites
3. ACTIONS • Identification of sites – in the UK and in France • Consortium definition • Identification of funding streams such as FP7/8, TSB and ADEME • Development of the scope of the project • Definition of ownership
4. OUTPUTS • Specific sensors: definition of the minimum number of sensors you would need to have a robust nursery site • Specifically to develop tidal stream site offshore • Site specific environmental data including: • - marine resource data • - geological data • - environmental data • - atmospheric data • 5. OUTCOMES • New WaT marine test sites • Operational robust measurement techniques • Site for pre-commercial devices to be tested in (relatively) secure and well-measured environment • Link to EMEC standards
6. Initial Interest Group George Smith, University of Exeter Jim Grant University of Exeter Deborah Greaves, University of Plymouth JingJing Xu University of Plymouth Ned Minns, IT Power
Outcomes to date New Test Site Development University of Exeter is working with a sub-regional partnership in Cornwall to develop ‘FabTest’ (Falmouth Bay Test Site for devices at TRL 7-8). Partnership with FHC (consents), local supply chain and the University (Baseline Monitoring) Funding bid to UK Government Recognised demand (FO, OPT, OWEL)
Outcomes to date New Test Site Development Solent Ocean Energy Centre Based on natural resources, engineering capability on the Isle of Wight. Development coordinated by Envirobusiness. Funding bid to UK Government
Outcomes to date Further collaboration No cross-border developments as yet although this may be possible through MERIFIC project. Mutual support between UK test site developers
Conclusions Site developments enable pre-commercial devices to be tested in (relatively) secure and well-measured environments Strong links with research groups Notable advantage for technology developers saving both time and money at pre-commercial stage (consents, availability).
