Fox Characteristics • In the summer the arctic fox is a dark gray to bluish brown in color. The white or creamy white fur coat it has is thick for the harsh, cold winters. This fox has a long bushy tail, a short nose, and small curled back ears. With short legs and all these characteristics, they are adaptations to all the ice and snow.
Fox Diet • The Arctic fox is a scavenger. It will eat just about everything. It mostly eats what polar bears leave behind. The fox can make its own freezer to store is leftover food in. It makes it by digging a hole in the permafrost and dragging a block of ice and placing it over the hole and carcass or carcasses.
Fox Range • In north America the arctic fox can be found from western Alaska to northern Canada in the Northwest Territories, Alberta, Manitoba, and Quebec. It is also found in the arctic regions of Europe, Asia, Iceland and Greenland.
Fox Life Cycle • The arctic fox mates between February and June The female builds a new den and gives birth to six to twelve dark furred kits. Both the female and the male take care of the kits until they are four weeks old.
Fox Behavior The arctic fox is a nomadic animal. It darts from place to place looking for food. In the summer they live in families made up of a male, one or two females and the kits. The second female is a leftover kit from the year before. She doesn't breed, she cares for the young.
Fox Habitat • In the summer the arctic fox lives in the tundra at the edge of a forest. In the winter it can be seen on ice glaciers where its white coat serves as camouflage. Its den is usually a hole in a hillside or snow bank. The den usually has more then one entrance.
