More Than 40 Years of Contacts with Boudine Philippe Lemaire 21 October 2005
1962-1965 (Service d’Aéronomie, Verrières le Buisson) • Jean-Pierre preceded me in SA by few months • We have shared (with Roger Bonnet and few others) the same office during at least one year • Jean-Pierre was already working on absorption cell (…) • This was the period of Sahara rocket launches
1966-1968(Service d’Aéronomie, Verrières le Buisson) • We shared (with D. Samain) the same office • Jean-Pierre was preparing ‘Dragon’ rocket to be launched in the Landes with a solar Helium absorption cell. I was making balloon launches with a solar Magnesium II spectrograph. • We co-operated: • Lemaire,P., Delaboudinière,J.P., (1968) Préparation au VIème plan - Proposition de satellite pour l'étude de la chromosphère solaire, Rapport interne du Service d'Aeronomie n°167 • We competed on D2B (CNES): • Charra,J., Huriet,H., Lemaire,P., (1968) Satellite D2B - Proposition d'expérience • (Lα, Mg II, Ca II) • Delaboudinière, J-P, (?) (1968) Satellite D2B – (150-1300A, grazing incidence spectrometer ?) selected
1969-1971(LPSP, Verrières le Buisson) • We shared (with D. Samain) the same office • Jean-Pierre has several unsuccessful rocket launches in the Landes • We were preparing a bi-face rocket experiment on a Veronique: • One side: solar Helium absorption cell (Boudine) • Other side: solar absolute Mg II lines calibration (D. Sacotte, P. Lemaire et al) • OSO8/NASA proposal selected: • Lemaire,P., Vidal-Madjar,A., Vial,J.C., Bonnet,R.M., (1969) Study of the chromosphere fine structure by means of simultaneous high resolution observations of the profile of Lyman alpha, Lyman beta, MgII and CaII H and K lines
1972-1976(LPSP, Verrières le Buisson) • 1972, the Veronique rocket launch from Kourou (Guyana) failed (rocket cap not ejected). Then new instrumentations are built for a successful launch from White Sand in 1975 • Use of the LURE ACO synchrotron ring to calibrate D2B optical components • 1975, OSO8 (June) and D2B (December) are put in orbit • D2B works one year and OSO8 three years and three months. • D2B solar data (after a sophisticated treatment) are available as images at several wavelengths in Solar Geophysical Data
1977-1981(LPSP, Verrières le Buisson) • Jean-Pierre was involved in several proposals to measure the absolute flux of the Sun (DISCO?, ..) and established contacts with several labs in URSS. • I was involved in several proposals (CNES, NASA), in the development RASOLBA balloon gondola and instrumentation and in OSO8 data analysis
1982-1985(LPSP, Verrières le Buisson) • 1982, GRIST studies: • Malinovsky-Arduini,M., Delaboudinière,J.P., Lemaire,P., Cougrand,B., Soufflot,A., (1982) Design and interface definition of a model focal plane instrument for GRIST: a normal incidence spectrometer • 1982, proposal for a SOHO mission (ESA) • Arduini-Malinovsky,M., Delaboudinière,J.P., Lemaire,P.,(LPSP), Huber,M.,(ETH-Zurich), Patchett,B.,(RAL-Chilton), Van Beek,H. (SRL-Utrecht), (1982), Solar High Resolution Observatory - SOHO - Investigation of the Dynamics and of the Mass Loss of the Outer Solar Atmosphere • Other proposal (Columbus/ESA) • Foing, B.H., Delaboudinière, J.-P., Gabriel, A.H., Lemaire, P., Patchett, B., Bromage, G., Bruner, M.E., Tarbell, T., Schmitt, J., Serio, S., (1985), Multiband Ultraviolet Subarcsec Imaging Cameras (MUSIC) • 1983, Jean-Pierre is member of the LURE SUPERACO beam studies to obtain a calibration output for UV Astrophysics
1986-1992(LPSP/IAS, Verrières le Buisson) • 1986-1989, we shared the same office • (Study and realization of a calibration station connected to SUPERACO synchrotron ring) • IPHIR (cooperation with URSS) • J-F Hochedez thesis on Characterization of back illuminated thin CCD (CNES-THOMPSON fellowship) • EIT and SUMER are selected to be on-board of SOHO • Delaboudinière, J.P., Gabriel, A.H., Artzner, GE., Michels, D., Dere, K., Howard, R., Catura, R., Stern, R., Lemen, J., Neupert, W., Cugnon, P., Koeckelenbergh, A., Van Dessel, E.L., Jamar, C., Maucherat, A., Chauvineau,J.P., Marioge, J.P.(1987) ‘EIT’ – Extreme-ultraviolet Imaging Telescope • Wilhelm,K., Lemaire,P., Curdt,W., Gabriel,A.H., Huber,M.C.E., Jordan,S.D., Marsch,E., Poland,A.I., Richter,A.K., Thomas,R.J., Timothy,J.G., Vial,J.-C., + 30 Associated Scientists, (1987), Solar Ultraviolet Measurement of Emitted Radiations - SUMER
1992-2005(IAS, Orsay) • 1995, SOHO launch. EIT provides several full (and partial) solar images per day in 4 wavelengths; SUMER uses them to define the solar context • Other common proposal (rejected): • Hassler, D.M., Thompson, B.J., DeForest, C., Slater, D.C., Leka, K.D., Kucera, T.A., Judge, P.G., Harvey, K.L., Ayres, T.R., Hudson, H.S., Woods, T.N., Gurman, J.B., Longcope, D.W., Warren, H.P., Berghmans, D., Clette, F., Curdt, W., Delaboudinière, J.-P., Defise, J.-M., Hochedez, J.F., Lemaire, P., Mason, H.E., Rochus, P., Schuehle, U., Verwichte, E., Wilhelm, K., (2000) ESSEX (EUV Solar Spectroscopic Explorer)
Conclusion • I have probably missed some important events • We have survived 4 solar cycles of cooperation and competition • One meeting point was the visit to the library, every day after lunch, to look at the new scientific magazines on the display unit • I hope to continue to keep contact with Boudine during many years in the future
