Out of more than 30 years of friendship I remember with fondness…
Colin’s five-day visit to Port-au-Prince, Haïti where Algonquin College was delivering a multi-year CIDA-funded teachers’ training program
Although genuilely interested, Colin did not buy a hand-made pair of shoes or a straw hat
But he could not resist a coconut just picked-up from the tree ..
To his credit, Colin managed to buy a painting amid the chaos of the famous Iron Market..
He did not go to the « Versailles » of Cap-Haitien (destroyed by an earthquake in 1842), but felt at ease among the ordinary Haitians…
At home, he sure got an attentive service from Amoleon and Francine..
who were, as everybody else, greatly scared by our dog (no peacock there…)
However, despite the dog, on Colin’s last day in Haïti, a band of local musicians came to the gate of the house and sang« nou renmé ou »
Which, in creole, means We love you… So do we …. Andrée Bichon Algonquin College Colleague
