Agenda Youth vulnerability on the roads Challenges young people face Our story: an example of youth involvement Activities of YOURS Closing www.youthforroadsafety.org
Introduction www.youthforroadsafety.org • Facts • Road crashes are the leading killer of young people • Every year more than 400.000 young people die • Millions more are injured • Unless more comprehensive global action is taken, the number of deaths and injuries is likely to rise significantly
Young people and road safety www.youthforroadsafety.org • Why are young people at risk? • Inexperience • Overestimation • Risk taking • Peer pressure • Brain development
Current situation: challenges www.youthforroadsafety.org A lack of awareness and recognition in the world of the vulnerable position of young people in traffic; A fragmentized approach and divergences in strategies among youth and youth-led NGO's and their road safety initiatives. Youth road safety initiatives remain small-scaled and scattered; Absence of one strong voice to advocate on the behalf of youth and road safety on a global level;
Current situation: challenges www.youthforroadsafety.org A lack of resources for youth road safety initiatives; A lack of a next generation of leaders who are passionate about road safety and involved in decision making within the road safety field; A lack of capacity development. Road safety knowledge and best practices from youth initiatives are not shared in a broader network.
Youth involvement www.youthforroadsafety.org We believe... that road crashes are preventable road safety does not stop at our borders in the high potential of youth it is young people themselves who can be at the forefront of making a difference
