Context of the Expert Consultation • First Expert Consultation on Economic Data, has been held in December 2004, hosted by HMU (World Bank), in Washington D.C. • It brought together data collector, data suppliers/source holders and data users: World Bank, ADB, Reinsurance Companies, OFDA, ECLAC, OCHA, ProVention, IRI 5th EM-DAT TAG Meeting - WDC - August 2005

  3. Aims of the meeting • Improve economic and aid contribution data for natural disasters • Compile and data mine sources not examined before • Establish best practical procedures for these data 5th EM-DAT TAG Meeting - WDC - August 2005

Identification of problems in EM-DAT • Over the past 3 decades, economic losses reported for less than 30 % of all natural disasters • No systematic collection of economic data • Evaluation of economic damage not systematically undertaken • Non-standardised methodologies in reporting disaster economic losses • Losses from major disasters generally reported (but only for direct losses, with little mention to indirect losses and even less of secondary costs) 5th EM-DAT TAG Meeting - WDC - August 2005

Issues discussed • Economic Data Collection: Overview of economic data available, gaps and weaknesses • Data sources and quality of indicators • Data coding, validation procedures and methodology • Financial data on international aid/assistance for disasters • Scope and parameters of action to be taken 5th EM-DAT TAG Meeting - WDC - August 2005

Conclusions of the meeting (1) Inclusion of new additional fields for economic data (2) Better reporting of sources (3) Need to establish a clear methodology (4) Better field methodology for damage assessment (5) Better exchange of information and enhanced co-operation between partners 5th EM-DAT TAG Meeting - WDC - August 2005
