  1. Welcome to CP 10 The Lord of the Flies Chapters 1-4

  2. Welcome to class!August 17, 2016 Do Now: Take out your notebook AND your notes on literary terms. In your notebook, write down the following terms and define them: Adverb, Preposition, Conjunction

  3. Adverb Adverb: A word that describes a verb, adjective, or another adverb. Examples: SUDDENLY, James found his quiet, boring life had changed. She was EXTREMELY nice.

  4. Prepositions Prepositions: Words that show the relationship between a noun/pronoun and some other word or element in the rest of the sentence. • Example: The cupcake WITH sprinkles is mine.

  5. Conjunctions Conjunctions: Words that join two or more words, phrases, or clauses. Examples: BOTH the soccer team AND the swimming team are doing well. I will eat broccoli AFTER I eat this cookie.

  6. The Lord of the Flies • Read Chapter 1, pgs. 7-31 • Annotate as you read. Use your annotation guide! • Also annotate specifically for these characters: Mark and summarize character traits, feelings, actions or treatment towards others, appearances, and background information for these characters.

  7. Figurative Language Review • Take out your Figurative Language handout. • Make sure your name is on it. • Did you know these 4 terms? What was difficult?

  8. Homework • Finish reading and annotating chapter 1. • Complete the parts of speech worksheet.

  9. Welcome to class!August 18, 2016 • Do Now: Take out your journal, your novel, and your Parts of Speech homework. • Put your homework in the tray above the bookshelf. • Complete the questions for chp. 1. Do not use your book.

  10. Figurative Language • Why is this a METAPHOR? This toy of voting was as pleasing as the conch. Think: what is being compared? Is the comparison direct (is) or indirect (like/as)?

  11. The Lord of the Flies Thinking about the novel- Complete a concept web in your notebook for the following term: DEMOCRACY

  12. Totalitarianism(Think Fascism and Communism) TOTALITARIANISM

  13. SYMBOLISM Our goal today is to identify objects in the text that symbolize/represent the concepts of both democracy and totalitarianism. What is the difference between a symbol and an archetype?

  14. The Lord of the Flies • Read chapter 2, pgs. 32-47 • Annotate as you read. Use your annotation guide! • Identify symbols of DEMOCRACY and TOTALITARIANISM as you read.

  15. HOMEWORK • Finish reading and annotating chapter 2. • We will have a quiz over chapters 1-4 on Tuesday.

  16. August 19, 2016 Do Now: Take out your novel. Completethe sections for the CONCH and the KNIFE on the SYMBOLISM CHART. Include page numbers after your descriptions. In the Analysis section, explain what the symbol represents and how this is developed in the first two chapters.

  17. SYMBOLISM • Glasses:What do we associate with glasses? What do they help Piggy do in the novel? How else are they used? • Huts:What do we normally associate with huts/shelter? Who works on the huts in the novel? What does this reveal?

  18. The Lord of the Flies • Read chapter 3, pgs. 48-57 • Annotate as you read. Use your annotation guide! • Complete the Symbolism Chart.

  19. Homework • Finish reading and annotating chapter 3. • Quiz Tuesday over chapters 1-4 • Back to School Night is Monday!
