  2. Important Cities Trenton: Trenton has been the capital of New Jersey since 1790. The golden dome of the state capitol rises above the downtown area. Jersey City: Jersey city is a major seaport and industrial hub. It is across the Hudson river from New York City. Paterson: Paterson was founded in 1791. It grew from a small town on a river to a bustling city.

  3. Famous People Alice Paul: Alice Paul was Born in Moorestown,in1885. She was a leader to help women get their rights.She founded the National Women’s Party in 1913 and got women’s right to vote in 1920. Dorothea Lange: Dorothea Lange is famous for taking pictures of people during the Great Depression and posted them in newspapers. She convinced people to help in different programs. Dorothea was born in 1895. Frank Sinatra: Frank Sinatra was born in 1915.He was a popular singer for 50 years. He acted in over 60 films, winning an Academy Award in 1953, for his role in From Here To Eternity.

  4. State Symbols Flower: The state flower of New Jersey is the Purple Violet. Bird: The state bird of New jersey is the Eastern Goldfinch. Tree: The state tree of New Jersey is the Red Oak.

  5. Places to Visit Wildwood: Wildwood is like Atlantic City. The boardwalk there is 2 and ½ miles long. Also there are a lot of rides on the boardwalk. Hotels and motels are tuning into condos that are expensive. Atlantic City: Atlantic City is the largest seaside resort in the world. This place is famous for its gambling casinos. There is a boardwalk too. The boardwalk is made of wood, steel, and concrete. The boardwalk is 60 feet wide. Cape May: Cape May is the oldest resort in the United States. Cape May has over 250 Victorian buildings. Most homes, hotels, shops, and other buildings were constructed in the late1800’s.

  6. Landforms New Jersey is divided into 4 major land regions: The Atlantic Coastal Plain: The Atlantic Coastal Plain is the most fairly level region that covers two-thirds of the state. Appalachian Ridge: The Appalachian Ridge cuts acrossed the states northwest corner. New England Uplands:The New England Uplands, also called the highlands, holds many of the states lovely lakes. The Piedmont: The Piedmont is an area of rolling hills in which New Jersey largest cities are.

  7. Bodies of Water The Coastline is a long narrow sandbar that makes up most of New Jersey’s 130 mile coastline. Many inlets break the coast and lead to bays between the sandbars and the mainland.The body of water that borders New Jersey is the Atlantic Ocean.

Population Current population : 8,724,560 people Population rank is 9th in the nation Size/area ranks New Jersey 47th in the nation The ethnicity of New Jersey consists of: White 79.31%, African-American 13.41%, Hispanic 9.57%, Asian and Pacific Islanders 3.53%, Native American 0.19%, and Other 3.56%.

  9. Climate New Jersey has warm to hot summers and cold winters. In July 76 F in the south west and 70 F in the north. January temperatures range from 34 F at Cape May to 26 F in the Appalachian Mountains.

  10. Manufacturing/Industry New Jersey’s Factories turn out $44 billion worth of products a year. Manufactured goods make up 17% of New Jersey’s entire economic out put. Manufactured goods: chemicals, medicines, shampoos, lotions, detergents, paints, baking products, telephones, and lighting products

  11. Natural Resources Natural Resources: soil, granite, sand, gravel, clay, peat, and zinc

  12. Agriculture Farmland covers nearly 20% of New Jersey’s land area. There are about 9,600 farms in New Jersey. Agricultural products: roses, holly, milk, tomatoes, cabbage, peaches, blueberries, cranberries, eggs, cattle, and hogs

  13. State History The New Jersey Turnpike was completed in 1952. Henry Hudson sails up the Hudson river in 1609. Train Service to Atlantic City begins in 1854. The pineland becomes an inter –national reserve in 1983. In Atlantic City, gambling is allowed in 1976 Immigration swells New Jersey in 1915. New Jersey becomes the third state in 1787.

  14. Amazing Facts • New Jersey is shaped like the letter S. • There are only four other states smaller than New Jersey: Hawaii, Connecticut, Delaware, and Rhode Island. • New Jersey has more than 800 lakes. • New Jersey has more than 100 rivers and creeks.
