Atonement’s Motif Presented by: Sarah Adkins, JC High, Tori Patrick, Jessica Spleen Power!
Briony’s Creation • The story, the lie; the power to change the destiny of two star-crossed lovers • Briony created her ideal world that allowed imagination and reality to thrive as one • The contentment of having power over both the characters and the audience
Examples • The letter and the note together, allowed Briony to have the power of the future events • To continue with Briony’s manipulation of her family, she used the play to control Lola and the twins
Examples Continued • Attempting to have power over her destiny • Staying on the rock until there is change • Her manipulative ways: • Robbie saving her • Audience believing the ‘story’ • The control of Lola, to get Robbie in trouble • The nettles, feeling empowered through “destroying friends and family”
Cecilia and Robbie • The relation between them, Cecilia was dominant over Robbie • Robbie was very passive about his feeling towards Cecilia • Robbie was the first to advance their relationship to a ‘physical level’
Is Destiny Changeable? • In the mind of a psychotic author, Briony believes that destiny is changeable • Through creating a story with a non-existent happy ending, Briony is able to forgive herself as well as give peace and enlightenment to Cecilia and Robbie • The completion of atonement is impossible for everyone (only Briony)
Paul, the Rapist • Had the power to free Robbie, and controlled the destiny of their relationship • Overpowered Lola; Left feeling victimized after being assaulted, already being in a fragile mental state (Twins) • Paul knew he was in control of Lola because of raping her and then marrying her, even after she knew he raped her
