YOGA FISH POSE (MATSYASANA) Celeste Shirley Founder : The Yoga House , Toronto
Fish Pose (Matsyasana) Fish pose stretches the front of the body, particularly: the throat chest abdomen hip flexors and intercostals (the muscles between your ribs)
It strengthens the upper back muscles and the back of the neck improves spinal flexibility and posture With my students I have seen that this pose is excellent for offsetting a cold or flu when they feel a scratchy throat or any other indicators that a flu is coming on when practicing this pose, look up as this is good for the eye muscles and can increase your spinal flexion by 10 -15 degrees according to osteopathy
Cautions: Abnormal Blood Pressure: Individuals suffering from high or low blood pressure should avoid this posture. If you have had an injury to the neck or any part of the lower or middle back then this pose can be contraindicated, please wait until you have clearance from a medical authority before trying this pose. Adaptation: Fish pose can be done with pillows behind the shoulder blades and to help the shoulder blades to come down the back and to support the upper spine.
