What is CE RFID? • Coordination Action funded within the 6th Framework Programme by the European Commission • Duration: April 2006 – September 2008 • Objectives: • Improve the market conditions for RFID technology • Strengthen the technology development in Europe • Inform stakeholders and policy makers about requirementsfor a favourable regulatory environment for RFID • Initiate a broad discussion on RFID topics in Europe

What are our key recommendations? • Active sponsorship and funding for RFID-specific cooperative R&D: from applied research to close to market innovation • Generic, interoperable and easily applicable standards • Close cooperation between the existing international standardisation organisations • Companies need application-specific guidelines to implement RFID • Upholding the principle of technology neutrality in the regulatory approach • Need of continuous dialogue between all stakeholders  All these topics have to be discussed with international focus to support the competitiveness of the European (RFID) industry in the world

Next steps for European Stakeholders • Research & Development / RFID Technology Suppliers • Better alignment of publicly and privately funded R&D along the RFID value chain to shorten time to market • RFID End User Companies and Business Associations • Participate actively in discussions and cooperate closely with other stakeholder groups • Standardisation Organisations • Close cooperation between the different Standard Development Organisations (SDOs), e.g. between ISO and EPCglobal (ISO 18000-6C & EPC Class1 Gen2) • SDOs shall allow easy and affordable access for SMEs on national and international level

Next steps for European Stakeholders • Governmental Institutions • Facilitate dialogue among different stakeholders • Follow up the development of technology to ensure an appropriate regulatory framework • Support the providing of public information addressing the needs of the different stakeholder groups • Non-Governmental Organisations • Cooperate closely with other stakeholder groups (especially politics and industry) • Ensure that urgent topics are discussed and agreed on

CE RFID continues… • Foundation of a “European RFID network” as a follow-up organisation • Phase I • Disseminate the results from CE RFID to the community • Phase II • Be a forum for European RFID users, manufacturers and solution providers to discuss and agree on current RFID topics • Identify opportunities to improve the European approach towards RFID • Propose and foster related activities • Kick-off in November 2008
