How many words are in your vocabulary? • It’s estimated there are between 1.5 and 2 million words in the English language • Evolving technology is adding about 2,000 new words each year!
Where do these words come from? • 90% of English words are Latin based • 75% of Spanish words are Latin based A single Latin root is a part of 5-20 English words Latin curro = “to run” course current occur cursive cursor concur accurate incur
Three Kinds of Roots Suffix Prefix – appears at the beginning Base – the middle part Suffix – the end BASE The BASE holds up the entire word Prefix ROOT – any part of a word that “holds meaning”
