  2. Storyboard for Final Project • The student will be creating a Project on “The Evolution of Jazz”. The topics that need to be included in the project are: • History (Where, when and how) Timeline • Include musicians that are involved • Social Economic status during that period • Instruments that may have been played • How it relates to the music of today. The students are allowed to use PowerPoint for their presentation or imovie. They will also be using Audacity to record their voices for an interactive experience and for recording music they may choose to use in their presentation. A tutorial for Audacity will be included in this storyboard to help the students become more familiar with the use of this program.

Storyboard for Final Project • Your final project should follow a format similar to this one. • As you work in teams, be mindful to support each other’s ideas and assist each other in a respectable and responsible way. • Be mindful to use fonts that are simple and easy to read. The first page of your project should be your title page listing every person involved in your project. The last page should be your bibliography.   5. How Does Sound get on your Computer? • Your computer has a sound card. It could be a separate card or built in to the computer. Your operating system talks to the sound card to do the recording and playback. Audacity communicates with your operating system so that the sound can be captured and sent to a file.   6. How To Use Audacity • Audacity is a powerful program that you as students can use to enhance your project you are about to complete. • Please follow all instructions completely and you will love your results. • Remember, you can always re-do any part of this assignment at any time.

Functions of the Tool Bar • The tool bar gives you everything you need to get started. • All of the buttons for recording, playback, pause, fast forward and and rewind are displayed. • Volume controls are available for the internal microphone • The balance can be controlled in this pane.   9. Go to the File menu, click on it and then click on NEW.

  10. Now go to the column that says “tracks” This will open up a new track for you to record on.Audacity writes all changed and recorded audio to a directory called Projectname_data, which is where you save your project.

  11. Beginning To Record • The 6th button “red”, allows you to record your voice when you click on it. The “green” arrow will play back what you have recorded. The square button stops everything. Play Stop Pause Record

  12. When recording, the screen turns gray in the track and blue lines with waves appear as you speak.

  13. Larger Look at Recorded VoiceYou can only have one clip per track. A clip is a piece of audio material. One track can only carry one recorded piece at a time.

  14. Adding New Tracks • Go back to the top and find the word “Tracks”, click on it and double click the word “Add New”. This allows you to add music to another track that can be played as you hear yourself speaking on your first track. • When done with all of your recordings, you can pull this menu down again and “mix and render.

  15. Importing Music From Another Source • If you have saved your music in iTunes or on a disk or another drive, you can import it into Audacity by Going to file and clicking “import”

  16. Playback • The imported file will be displayed in an audio track. The track will appear like this. • Hit the play button to listen to what you imported

  17. Save, Save, Save • Save your work so that you can include it in your final project. • Follow these simple steps for exporting your work from Audacity to be made available for other programs such as PowerPoint to use. • 1. Go to file, export selection(a box like this will appear): Fill in the artist name (your name)and a title then click o.k.

  18. Preparing for Export • A “save as” box will appear. Make sure the format is WAV(Microsoft) signed 16bit PCM Fill it in and click “save” Now your sound(s) are ready for use in your project

  19. Using in PowerPoint • If you want to include sounds or music created in Audacity in your project, follow these steps: • In PowerPoint go to the top icons and click on Insert. A drop box will fall. Click on Movies and sounds and then click “Sound from file” • Look for your saved file and click ok. It will look like this: • This same format can be used to insert pictures saved on your computer in your projects.
