3. What is Science Olympiad Team Competition set up like a track meet Team consists of 15 students who compete in 23 events with each student averaging 3 – 4 events. Events cover all aspects of science and each event has its own set of rules and scoring system. Each event can win medals and earn points towards their team’s overall point total. 5. Practice Schedule • Will vary from week to week. • Check website and Edmodo for most up to date information. • Fall – usual days will be Mon – Wed – Fri from 3:10 – 5:00. • Spring days will be different based on schedules. • May occasionally do Saturday practices the weekend before a competition but usually not until the spring semester.

6. Study Information and Student Preparedness • Students should be working at home as well as practice. Students who have other obligations such as sports, MUST check in with me at least once a week and let me know what they have been working on. • Practices are for studying, not playtime or socializing. Students who are distracting others will be asked to leave. • Students are responsible for creating their own notes/binders/graphs/etc in a timely fashion. • DO NOT wait until the night before to print out the stuff you need! You never know when you will run out of ink and/or paper or your printer stops working.

7. We expect everything to be completed at least 2 days prior to competition especially if you need us to print things out for you or if it is something we need to pack. • The rule sheets have all the details of what the student needs to study/prepare/build/etc. • Rules will be put on Edmodo when we receive them and your student will receive the code to Edmodo when I receive their registration form and event sign-up form. • Students should be prepared to study for their top 4 events but realize that things may change as we go along and they may be asked to study something different.

8. Team Selection • Final team placements will be made based upon coaches’ observations, attendance, and performance. • Team placements may, and usually do, change between competitions and can change all the way to state. • Team needs come before the wants of the individual student as an individual student cannot move on to the next level alone. Either the whole team moves on or nobody moves on and I have to do what is best for the team.

9. Website and Edmodo Information • Website is teachers.olatheschools.com/onscienceolympiad • All forms, practice schedule, competition schedule, event descriptions, etc are on the website. • Not on website are rules and old tests – those will be on Edmododue to password requirements. Students will receive the Edmodocode once they have turned in their forms. • After every competition, tests received will be scanned and uploaded to Edmodo for students to access.

10. Competitions – Invitational/Regional/State/National Open – Southland/Excelsior Springs/Northland Closed – St. James/Kapaun /Regional/State/National • All students compete as one big team. • Can have multiple student/pairs per event. • Top student/pair per event receives the medal. • Usually 4 – 5 one hour timeslots. • Students are expected to compete in no less than the number of timeslots – 1 events during the day. For example, if there are 5 timeslots, the students are expected to compete in at least 4 events. • Only 15 kids per team with no more than 7 seniors. • Only one student/pair per event per team. • At invitationals, can have more than one team. • At regionals/state/nationals, can only have one team. • All 23 events must be covered per team. • Each team capable of winning their own medals/trophies.

How Can Parents Help? • Become involved with the team – strong parent involvement leads to a strong team • Help with fundraising • Garage sale this Thursday, Friday, and Saturday – please donate items and/or time • Funnel cake sales at Football games and Homecoming bonfire • Candy Sales – Donate full size candy bars to sell • Coach an event – if you have expertise in a certain area, please volunteer to help. Your child does not have to be doing that event in order for you to help. • Provide Healthy Snacks for practice and/or competitions
